ATI annouces agreement with Microsoft for Xbox2

While the ATI Fanboys will thump their chests and hoot like monkeys about their alleged "superiority", the REAL reason is most likely M$ didn't like Nvidia suing them to get paid for the Xbox chips they supplied. I always suspected that this might bite them in the arse and it did.

Also, does this mean ATi is gonna get into the audio biz as well? The much-beloved (even by the Nvidia playa haters) nForce chipset is a result of the Xbox dev process. No Nvidia means no Dolby solution. Does Creative get to supply AudigyBox chips or does ATi have to figure it out?

I think it will represent a large infusion of development money to ATI from Microsoft. As I recall, that is how Nvidia developed nforce mother boards. It was a very lucrative spinoff from XBox development. So it should advance the state of the art for the some years to come and keep this market VERY competitive.

Not necessarily. No nForce audio, certainly, but I've read that MS architected DD in a way that it can be implemented by other (non-nVidia) hardware. This would be important if Xbox2 is backward-compatible with Xbox (which I expect it to be), and I 'm sure MS was smart enough not to lock themselves into one supplier.

That makes the most sense, Paying for the licensing is chump change for MS and they just have to have the hardware pass Dolby certification and they are all set. Unless they've made some deal for THX??? Nah, that doesn't go with the backward compatability concept does it?

Interesting and great news for us ATI owners.
One of the reasons nvidia cards suck so badly is because nvidia got derailed focusing on the sexbox. Who's to say history doesn't repeat itself with ati?

Nvidia should have been smart enough to have a separate team work on the xbox development. ATI will also don't they have artx that developed the gamecubes gpu?

artx was already working with Nintendo when ATI cam along and bought artx so they could put their name on the Gamecube just as nVidia got their's on the Xbox. It'll be interesting to see wtf happens with consoles as partners to MS/Nintendo/Sony seem to keep jumping around.

ATI is current partnering with Nintendo for the GameCube console, with this news, what would it mean for the next generation console from Nintendo? I doubt ATI would make graphic chips for both MS and Nintendo.

Since Sony is soloing (well, actually partnering with IBM for the cpu(s), don't know about the gpu), I think there is a good chance Nintendo and Nvidia will hook up somehow.

No telling. But I think ATI will play it right and get a lot more revenue with Xbox 2.

Err, how so? Will M$ be sending US any money? No. Will Xbox tech push the graphics tech further ahead? No, Xbox parts have to be cheap so Xboxs can be.
Do you own stock in ATI? If yes, that may be great news.

It doesn't matter if I own stock in them or not. I am happy to see the company I invest in (buying a 9800 Pro) is doing well and making what I feel is a good business decision. I mean this could lead to many more good things.

Didn't ATI supply the chips for GCube? Hmmm, so ATI turned on Nintendo, lots of double dealing in the graphics/console industry/

Yeah, that's the ticket!
I have a Nokia monitor, a Sony monitor, 2 Asus mobos, an ATI 9800P, a PNY Ti4200, an Audigy2, an Audigy, some Crucial RAM, some PNY RAM, an AMD1700+, a P4 2.53- when any of these companies I've "invested" in score a contract, it's good news for me!

Uhhhh.....yep, benefits galore........they'll be comin' soon....the checks are probably in the mail.......
