I don't necessarily agree with the way you classify these cards. For example, the performance difference between the 8800gt and the 8800gts is so small, that these two cards really belong in the same mid-high end category. On the other hand, the 9600gt is still a midrange card, and trails the g92 cards by a full resolution level in performance.

@Munky - after spending some time looking at the latest charts, I'm inclined to disagree with you. 8800gt is about 5% faster on average than an 9600gt, while the 8800gts is about 10% faster than an 8800gt (for example, see http://techreport.com/articles.x/14284/5). When you take into account energy consumption (the delta is bigger between 9600gt/8800gt than between 8800gt/8800gts), and price, I'm hard-pressed to see why anyone would get the 8800gt at this point, unless they spring for the very cheap (after rebate) PNY card that OP posted. This is coming from an 8800gt owner. I'd go for the 8800gts or 9600gt, depending on how much one wants to spend. Thoughts, anyone?

Nice work. I have my eye on a sealed (new in box) BFG geforce 8800 GT 512mb OC at a local salvage store. Currently it is at $200 after the 30% discount. Waiting for them to drop it to 60% off to pick it up. From the looks of your rankings, it is a good buy. (Hopefully no one will buy it in the meantime )

8800gt doesn't have a hidden overclocking feature like 9600gt does. When you get to higher resolution 8800gt really starts to pull away from 9600gt. also, 9600gt has been exclusively benchmarked with 174.xx drivers, so everyone is comparing apples to oranges in this case. if you throw out the hidden overclocking feature and compare all three cards at similar settings, you get 8800gts and 8800gt signficantly faster than 9600gt, especially at higher resolutions. The only difference between 8800gts 512 and 8800gt is slightly faster clocks on 8800gts 512, 16sp's, and dual-slot cooling that exhausts the heat out the back of case. Buy the msi OC 8800gt (~$190 at newegg AR, closer to $180 elsewhere), it has slightly faster clocks than a stock 8800gts which should make up for the missing 16sp's in the vast majority of cases, plus it already has a dual slot cooling solution that exhausts air out the back of the case. 8800gts 512 performance for $180-$190...why buy ANYTHING else until gt200 or r700?

Take a look at this review, they used the same driver for all Nvidia cards, unlike most other sites:

The 8800gt is about 20-25% faster on average than a 9600gt, and that's when the stock 9600gt is clocked higher. When you OC both of these cards, the difference will be even bigger.

yes, it's amazing to me that nobody has put more emphasis on the fact that the 9600gt was tested using a beta driver that isn't publicly available yet. I mean, the review sites have mentioned it, but I think that most people just look at the pretty charts and say "whoa, 9600gt is 1337! I gotta get me one NOW!!". If you take out the hidden oc that the 9600gt's get, there's an even greater difference. Also, many people think that the g94 core has some hidden improvements over g92. The only relevant different to gamers is that you can only 64 sp's on the g94 core.

@Bryan & Munky - thanks for the clarifications. I didn't know about the auto-overclocking or the beta driver issue with the 9600gt tests. Now I don't feel so bad about my 8800gt! That being said, if the 8800gts is only $30 more than an 8800gt after rebate, I'd go in that direction...
