ATI and crappy performance with transulency on screen.

Can someone tell me how to fix this? It bugs the hell out of me, I'm using this expensive 250 dollar video card in an old ass quake2 game which is able to push 100s of frames per second, yet the moment I jump into the water my fps drops to like 20. Or if someone shoots me and there's blood flying all over my screen (it's also translucent I guess) and it also gets real jerky and hard to fight back. This thing is like 10 times more powerfull than my geforce 4200, but I never had that kind of problem with Nvidia cards.

Thanx.

ATi has a bug with their point parameter extension which affects Quake 2 performance and makes it run much slower than normal.

just a driver fault then?

perhaps roll back to some previous drivers?

Well, it only slows down when there's translucency on screen for me, like when I'm underwater, looking through water or fighting someone in water. Pretty ridiculous that I have this $280 dollar card capable of doing like 1000fps in quake2 and I have to deal with 20fps when underwater or taking fire with blood flying all over the place. Any idea how to get that bug fixed or if they're planning on fixing it?

As for drivers, I'm using latest drivers right now, but my cousin has been using ati card for a couple years now and went through several driver updates and as long as I can remember, I always noticed his fps to get jumpy in water.

Thanx for info everybody.

I can barely remember Quake 2, but can't you disable translucency in the config or something?

You $250 ATI card probably makes up for the inconvenience in other areas. No card runs every game perfect.

The bug has been present since 4.12 but it's a very low priority for ATi since hardly anyone plays Quake 2.

You can improve performance by setting gl_ext_pointparameters to 0 but this may reduce/disable your particle effects so YMMV.

Yeah, I can disable it, but then Quake2 starts to look even crappier, no blood, no underwater effects.

I'll try that command BFG.

I know Quake2 is dead and all but it's this mod I keep coming back to that's got a hold on me called Action Quake 2. Hardly anyone plays it any more. Ahh, the good old days. Just can't get that kind of fun and mayhem action in newer games/mods.

Rollo's suggestion for a PCI nVidia card is a good one. Either that or try using an old OpenGL driver from ATi though depending on your card it may not be supported if you go too far back.
