ATi/AMD Radeon 6970 Just died

My HD Radeon 6970 Just died. Without any pre-signs.
It was NOT O.C. My son was playing NFS Most Wanted 2012,
then just lost the display.
When I rebooted its still doesn't show any display at all.
Card is a reference Model.
I never had a GPU failed on my like that at all.
Is there any thing I can do to revive back.
There is no burning or Dirt clog signs are there.

So we can rule out the MB then.Your PSU has enough juice for 6970?

I have to assume its been running fine in this system since it was installed. Unless the PSU was borderline to begin with and age degradation has put it below the minimum the card needs to boot I think we can rule the PSU out.

Though I've never had a card out right die while playing a game its not unheard of for that to happen. However, like Jaydip suggested you need to try the "faulty" card in another working system to completely narrow it down to the card itself.

Actually it happened to me once with a pretty crappy PSU 🙂

No point of checking the termal paste now ?

The thermal paste may have turned to dust (literally), so it doesn't transport the heat away from the GPU. I had this happen with my old 4850, with decent cleaning and new thermal paste, it ran like brand new. With even better temperatures then when it was brand new... 😛

My card is Not Dusty
Card is not displaying at all.
Did your old had exact same problem no display even at POST!

Yes, but it was more gradual. Artifacting in games and high temps. Didn't have the time to deal with it at the time. Then one day it simply refused to post. Properly it triggered over temperature protection or something.

As I wrote, reseating the cooler with new thermal paste, cured it. Its not a miracle cure, but with a card that's already dead, you've got little to loose. If you have some thermal paste laying about, that is.

Mine was just sudden more of like of Light Bulb or Fuse. It just went off.
Here is the pics of the card. I think it looks fairly clean, perhaps I can crack open clean it out though......

No burn mark or I think it looks dirty ?

Clean? You can't see anything with the shroud covering the whole card.
It would be good to open it up just to see if anything is burnt out or something inside and it might be dusty inside. Check/replace the tim while you are at it.

Exactly. You need to get the shroud of to see anything. But that leads to...

It is clearly burnt.

Certainly looks that way. But I'd prefer a higher resolution picture to be on the safe side.

On the back of the card, it looks discolored...usually, that is a sign of heat damage.

Where ? I don't see it ?
I hope you are not talking about one has some tape on it (Right side, above PCIE connector ) ?
Plus micro switch ?
They both have a some sort of Tape (from Day One).
I need to take some Macro Pics!

Anyone who can "clearly" see discoloration in those pics needs a new monitor.

Anyway, you can try "baking" the card in an oven. That has proven effective form of reviving for a lot of once "dead" pieces of hardware. Friend did it successfully with his PS3 and there have been several people over at hardforum that have done it with success on their video cards. You will need to remove the HSF and just put the bare card in there. 350 degrees fro about 15 minutes IIRC. You'll want roll up 4 tin foil balls to rest the card on top of so it's not sitting directly on the grill.
