I noticed twice tonight, two different vendors cards will not work with drivers from the ATI/AMD sight, one for example, the Asus 3870. Since AMD/ATI not longer manufactures their own brand of card, which i always bought when buying ATI, who uses ATI/AMD's reference drivers straight from their page?

I never knew about this and if thats the case I will either buy only cards that use ATI's direct reference drivers or jump on the Nvidia wagon...

Again, which vendor uses the 'reference' drivers

thanks

why should that have any relevance in your buying decision?

No idea what you are talking about but I think it may answer your question to know that all ATI cards- doesn't matter what manufacturer, work with the drivers released every month on ATI's website.

this is also my understanding ... i don't know of any discrete cards that will not work with the drivers offered on AMD/ATI's website.

notebooks are a different story, as they need to be qualified by the notebook vendor ... but every add-in card for a desktop PC will be able to use the ATI released catalyst driver from the AMD website.

by the way, even if the vendor supplied a customized driver version with, for example, and ASUS splash screen or something, you will still be able to use the official driver from AMD/ATI with no problem.

Thank you, that was the kinda answer i was looking for.

And again to the guy above, (Clandren) thanks again. What i think you didn't understand was that i'm kinda partial right now with ATI/AMD and was looking to find out which vendor's card won't work with the releases from ATI so I know what NOT to buy. Cause I stated before that I seen two different individuals reviews (not review sites) about two different manufacturing vendors that say the cards won't work with ATI's monthly release drivers and that worried me. The accountability of the reviews were moot too but it just caused an alarm. But as the guy stated above, all vendors cards do work with the ATI monthly release drivers.

Thanks Chief :)

Many Vendors have been making their own Drivers forever. Unless a Video Card has its own non-standard features, 99 44/100% of the time the Reference Drivers will work fine.

99 44/100%? WTF?

All desktop cards work perfectly with ATI's "reference" drivers. Laptop GPUs are a little more tricky but you can still get the latest drivers to work on them with modded infs, there are some nifty tools to do this (like DH's Mobility Modder) and even pre-packaged drivers ready for use like those found at laptopvideo2go.com

It hasn't always been this way. Hence the 66/100% discrepency. ;)

I tend to buy Saphire or Powercolor. They have always done me right. But no matter what ATI/AMD gpu I was on it always worked with the drivers on the ATI/AMD website. Whoever said the cards they reviewed couldn't use official drivers are full of it or they were reviewing Chinese pirate products.

The possible exception would be that they received a card before it was Officially released for preliminary testing.
