ATI all-in-wonder radeon vs. ?

2 years ago, I chose Matrox marvel g200-tv over ATI all-in-wonder 128 because my computer guru friends unanimously said ATI product is just horrible. Now I need to buy another all around video adaptor/capture card. I was not particularly impressed by marvel g200tv, mostly because of all the configuration problems I experienced and lack of compatible good video editing softwares. In fairness to Matrox, they run very active and informative problem solving forums, from which I have been helped a lot, though.

All-in-wonder radeon caught my attention now. I'm not really into 3D graphic or gaming. Important criteria for me are the compatibility (hopefully even in Linux environment) and good supporting video editing software.

Would you recommend something else over all-in-wonder radeon, and if so, why? Thanks.

I'm curious how much money you'd like for that G200TV! I have $35 sitting in Paypal right now... 🙂
How to juggle the output from that and a Voodoo5 might be tough though... maybe I need some kind of monitor switch box....

If you want a card right now, I would definitely say to go with the Radeon...even tho' I don't trust ATI. Simple reasons are:
- audio is a physical connection to the soundcard, so you can actually USE a pci soundcard the way it was designed (I hate the versions of Video Tools released after 1.21...I'm still using the 4.33 drivers on my Marvel just so I have volume control in VT)
- rippin' fast 3D video, without breaking the bank
- reportedly excellent video quality (nVidia may be the speed king, but their visual quality is easily beaten by several products, like ATI's Radeon series)

However, there have been problems reported with the Radeon, such as displaying some games in 16-bit properly. Of course, there's also the obvious complaints about inferior drivers. There's a BBS out there that was started by a Rage lover, that also has a Radeon section, but I can't find it.

Personally, I'm holding on to my Marvel G200 for now...but I'm certainly tempted by the Radeon AIW. Thing is, my system cannot utilize the power of this card, so why buy now, before upgrading my mobo and CPU?

Don't know about compatible graphics software for Radeon, but....

I own aiw radeon (4 months). Great DVD playback, excellent 2d 4me(although never seen 2 on geforce or voodoo), 3d speed, Tivo feature, no probs so far...

Just wanted to warn you though that radeons currently have problems with *some* trinitron monitors (usually 19in +) ie shimmering probs.

There is a thread in rage 3d forum where a guy actually was corresponding to ATI to fix this issue and last I heard ATI found a fix and is working with this guy and at their test center to finalize a fix/update driver, which is to be released after the next driver update (don't know when).

But it seems like a fix will be available via rage3d as soon as some prelim tests are done on that thread.

gluck.
