I purchased an ATI AIW 9700 pro, from the For Sale forum on Anandtech and the seller claims he forgot to package the remote and the Radio Frequency modual, which he shipped 5 days late, and I received after I had installed the Catalyst 4.6 Drivers. I installed the USB RF connector and the unit needed the drivers but the remote did not work. I went into the CD that came with the package and found the "remote" driver and installed it. The remote still did not work

I checked the battareies and found on each side one was 1.6 volts and the other about 1.55 volts and the same opn the other 2 batteries.

Is there anything else I could do to make the remote work?

Try unplugging the RF reciever from the USB port, uninstalled the remote software. Download the latest version from ATI. Install the remote software before plugging in the RF reciever. Once installed then plug in the RF reciever. I have a AWI 9600 pro and forgot to unplug the RF reciever once when I upgraded the software and the thing just didn't work quite right until I did the above.

How do you reinstall just the Remote driver? when it is installed with the catalyst 4.6 drivers.

According to the new drivers information, the remote is automatically installed with the Catalyst drivers. When I installed the 4.6 drivers to make the ATI AIW 9700 pr0 card work, the remote was not even in my possesion yet and was not in the USB slot, hense it should have worked wnen I got it and plugged it in. But it did not.
I even tried to put it into a different USB port and reinstalled the drivers, however without uninstalling the preveous one.
I only see the software installed in the control pannel's uninstall software.
And only the CD that came with the old software has the Driver Instalation for the remote alone. The Catalyst 4.6 does not have a remote Drtiver separately like the packaged CD does.

Lastly you said yours worked poorly, with the first installation, mine does absolutely zero - no reaction at all.

I went to ATI and I see 2 types of remote software.

REMOTE WONDER Software & Drivers
REMOTE WONDER II Software & Drivers

How do I know which one is for the ATI AIW 9700 Pro? They are each the same version 2.3.0.1

You want the Remote Wonder, not Remote Wonder II.

What he said Also it seems that you didn't get the manuals so here's the link to the
online install instructions for the remote wonder.

Two questions, when you push any button does the led light up, (upper left corner on the remote) and is the led on the reciever lit? I know simple but sometimes you can overlook the obvious.

In my case when I installed the software after plugging in the reciever nothing worked but the mouse curser, the remote wouldn't control any of the MMC apps. Switched the install order and everything is working fine. Device manager also showed a problem with the remote wonder controller.

Also check if the reciever is in the Device Manager under the USB controllers (ATI Wireless Remote Reciever). No red light on the reciever (last message by Slapstick) could be an ATI driver or usb issue, or a defective reciever. Try other usb ports especially one you have used sucessfully for other devices. If the ATI Drivers are installed, the reciever should be auto detected for XP (maybe 98 as well?) and show in the device manager. That may indicate a problem with the remote.

Those remote wonders require some extra driver called x10 or something like that. Wihout it the remote will never work but with it the remote works like a dream.

Thank you

I disconnected the RF modual
I removed the CD version of the remote via Control Pannel.
I installed the non "II" one after disconnocting the RF modual from USB.

The led light in the remote lights up each button I press on the remote but I see no change of any kind

Yes the led lights up
Yes the led on the receiver is lit

what install order did you switch ? in what order did it work?
I show no problem with the devices in the hardware drivers Device Manager.

The seller posted this in my private messages:

Yea i definately do not see a reason how it could become dead on the way there. I packed it just fine and it should of gotten there just fine. Maybe there are some configuration settings you have to change and they are possibly in the manual somewhere? If it somehow doesnt work, would you like a refund just for the remote or what?
Any suggestions on what I could configure and what I should reply to the seller?

Ok now you?ve got me stumped. If I understand you right:

1) Both LED?s are lit.
2) Both ATI Remote Wonder Controller and ATI Wireless Receiver both show up in device manager are working ok.
3) The ATI remote wonder software installed and is running.

It should be working. The only other thing I can think of is maybe the remote software may be misconfigured. Right click on the remote icon in the system tray and hit properties. Under options about halfway down is the button to set remote ID. Check to make sure it is set to accept commands from all remotes. Then hit test and follow the screen prompts. At least then you?ll know if the remote is talking to the receiver or not.

Edit: One last question, what's the latest Service Pack have installed? I know it works fine with SP3 and SP 4 but if I remember right, (and that's questionable) there may be problems with earier ones.

I would say either try it with another computer (you don't need an ATI card to use it), or if you know anyone with one working, or have a shop around with one, test it there. It doesn't look like a local install or pc hardware issue, more like the receiver or remote, but difficult to validate it (as you know). If you lived in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada area, I could help you there...
Oh, the only driver I used was from ATI. Don't know about x10 unless you are using x10 control modules. I think the Link was in a previous message, but here it is again.

I searched for X10 and found the following lincX10 linc

I do not understand how it is related to ATI remote control and nothing about it is said at ATI

It seems like a driver replacing and intell USB driver.

one other thing I thought of checking. the receiver is RF, so other RF devices 'could' interfer with it's functioning (dono how likely). If you have wireless keyboard, mouse, cordless phone, headphones, whatever RF based devices in the area, could try powering them down to see... I know, it's reaching...

Oh, and I think the x10 Ages120 is refering to is a plugin for the remote wonder to use with the software for x10 control devices (kinda like PLC for home automation) unless you know what this is, you don't need it.

He sounded promissing, but I have no clue what it is.

It's not the x10 driver or what ever. When installing the remote wonder on a Win98 or Win me system you may need to point the install to x10uif.sys file which in part of the remote wonder drivers. Since you have W2k there's no need to do it. Since you can't even get it to communicate when you test it then I'd say either the remote or the reciever is bad. One other thing, you did put fresh batterys in the remote?

I measured the voltage in the batteries and it was either 1.6 volts or above 1.550 volts, so that seemed enough to power the remote, however I did not put fresh ones in view of the full charges.

I'm tapped out...
try it on another pc if the battery thing doesn't work out. It controls volume & mute at a minimum with most things (like MP3 in media player). Or just open the volume controls & watch the sliders, mute checkbox (at least with xp).

I just unplugged the receiver rebooted and plugged it into another port.
It loaded a driver for that port and then ... no reaction to any buttons pressed .
I started the YV with my mouse button and tried changing channels, nothiung responds to it.
I try the volume I try the channels I try every button on it and no reaction. The LED lights up on the remote but nothing happens
