ATI AIW 7500 64mb vs AIW 8500DV 64mb

I was look at these two cards for doing some VHSs to DVD movie transfers. I am not too concerned about game-playing ability. Is there any good reason to pay extra for the 8500DV over the 7500? Also, just to know, what would the framerate hit be for the 7500 instead of the more expensive 8500.

Thanks,
Jason

I think the framerate you are going to get is based on your CPU speed and not your grahpics card. I believe that the AIW uses the same technology, I might be mistaken. You can check out ATI's website yourself to see the specifications on both cards.

The 7500 would be the better choice because the 8500 has always had the gamma issue that never was resolved, for just DVD playback the 7500 is the better choice.

The issue is going to be video quality vs. HDDs speed & space. If you have a way to capture via DV (i.e. ananlog to digital converter) then I'd spring for the 8500 DV... or just buy a firewire card.

I don't think I will need to capture via DV. Isn't that only for DV cam-corders? The only video input that will be happening with this card is from a VCR. I just figured a All In Wonder would be the best choice for doing this, unless of course there is a better third party PCI card available?

I have an AIW7500 and I like it. I have never used the 8500, so I am not sure about it. It plays all the games I want to play so it isn't to bad (I'm not much of a gamer). I watch tv and record without a problem. It also has xfree drivers and do a google search for gatos and you'll find a program to watch tv in linux if you are so inclined. I think it is a great card. I was thiking about upgrading to a AIW8500, but might wait until next year this time to get an older AIW9700.

I will say one thing though. Stick with a "built by ati" card. Most of the time they are better than the cheap "powered by" cards. I might would try a powered by 9700 or their next card, but the older cards made by other people just weren't as good as ati's.

Good luck

Will

AIW 8500 and up are the only AIW cards that support ATI's component HDTV adaptor. That's why I'd buy the 8500 over the 7500. However, if you aren't going to use HDTV and you aren't concerned about gaming ability, go with the 7500.

I've had both and prefer the 7500...I'm not a gamer, have no HDTV but what I like about the 7500 is that it'll do up to 1024x 768 on my TV whereas the 8500 wouldn't....of course the 9700 is the 1 in quest 😉
