ATI 9800pro 128 Video issues

I recently installed an ATI 9800 pro card with 128 meg. The install went arwy the first time as I didn't hve .Net runtimes installed. I did the uninstall using the ATI uninstall utility, installed .Net 1.1, reinstalled the CCC and was playing games no issues. Then my daughter tried to watch the trailer for The Incredibles at movies.yahoo.com and whoa the audia and the video are all screwed up. Basically it is like the colors are all inverted or something of the sort. The auidio is garbled. Seems like the Codec is broken but WTF?! It was working for a bit... After uninstalling and reinstalling numerous times trying the different variant of driver from ATI I am still in the same position. There was a point where the videos would play but the the CCC would complain the driver wasn't installed even though I was stairing at the ATI tabs in the advanced video property pages. Very wierd. At this point ATITool would render 3D but games would bomb out saying the hardware driver was not installed. Current status is just as original, 3D works, games work certain AVI files (WMV3?) will not work. I can shove a screen shot up if someone can point out how and where.

Ello, let's start off with a few questions.

1. What are the system specs?
2. Were any programs recently?
3. Is this ATI card the first one for your system? Or were you using another video card before?

Well the PS is a Enermax NoiseTaker 470W. I just mucked with the advanced settings in media player and all is well again. Video at launch.yahoo.com works fine with overlays turned off and looks like crud with them turned on. I was amiss regarding the audio. I had dropped an AVI on my desktop to use to test and IT was the source of the audio whoas.... sounded like purest crap! Anyway, the rest of my system is below.

Asus A7N8X Deluxe
AMD Athlon XP 1800
1 Gig RAM
2 WD Raptor 74 RAID 1
2 Maxtor 160 G RAID 0
1 Yamaha CD burner
1 generic 48X CDROM player
bunch-o-fans for some noise and stuff
ATI 9800 pro 128
Pacific Digital Talon 4 port SATA card
Occassional Cognex or Matrox Imaging cards in and out for work......(fun stuff in th registry :( )
ect...?

Is there a way to get this to work with the Overlays on? I thought I read somewhere that turning them off lead to a large performance hit, then what I just watched seemed pretty good, the music was darn good to boot!

If you are using WMP9, upgrading to WMP10 seems to take of the issue. There seems to be a conflict between WMP9 and the WMV hardware acceleration on the newer Catalyst Drivers. (if this is your issue)

Woohoo! Thanks a bunch. That fixed everything up just fine. Now video works good with overlays or high quality mode.... only thing is, I don't know what the difference is. Anyone out there care to reduce my ignorance yet again?

Basically Overlay Mixer filter is older tech and only uses the hardware overlay on the card and is generally limited to a single overlay surface on most cards to map the video stream. (usually will only show on the Primary display)

High Quality Mode uses VMR9 renderer which only uses D3D 9, instead of a mix of older and newer directdraw calls. It supports a host of features including creating multiple overlays in software in addition to the hardware overlay (can show on both primary and secondary displays) it also supports hardware acceleration features.

Thanks,

I do believe I get it. Multiple overlay eh. That is cool stuff. I do imaging for machine vision and the stuff I work with still has me struggling to get a one layer overlay working right. Be nice if they were as far up the curve as the graphics people are getting. Awsome stuff.

Thanks again to everyone for the help and especially to you rbv5 for the answers I was seeking. Great place here.
