ATI 9800 pro

I just install an ATI Radeon 9800pro in my home built.
(Asus P4sdx mb. w/512 mb ram, intel 2.53ghz.)
I can not get this thing to run with the AGP set to 8X in the bios. When its in 8X it locks up or restarts for no reason.I can't even start a game in 8X.When I set the AGP to 4X everything seems to work fine.
The card this is replaceing is a Gainward Geforce4 ti4200 which is an 8X card and everything ran fine.
This is the second Radeon 9800 pro card I've tried. The first one did the same thing so I thought it was the card.
Does running the card in 4X hinder it's performance?
Any suggestions to get this to run in 8X.
I have the newest bios and AGP driver for the mobo and I'm using catalyst 4.9
Any and all help would be appreciated.
Thank You

Honestly, don't let it bother you.

running at 4x will not hinder performance any. For something small such as this, I'd just deal with it (Because it truthfully does not matter)

no it is not important whether it is 4x or 8x . . . . .

HOWEVER, did you remove every TRACE of your nVidia drivers (i.e. "Driver Cleaner") BEFORE installing your Radeon?

Make sure your Motherboard support 8X, and if it does go to their site and see you install new VGA driver or flash update BIOS, or you can turn on 8X through your BIOS setting.

I did run Driver Cleaner in safe mode and removed all traces of NVidia.I have the power running directly to the card with no piglet.Power Supply is a 460 watt Enermax so I know its getting enough power.
kamranziadar: The ti4200 was an 8X card and the Asus P4SDX was running in 8X.Bios is updated and also the AGP driver. This has got me stumped. It's seems to work fine in 4X and Doom3 and Far Cry look great but its just annoying that you pay for an 8X and I would like it to run 8X.
Cooling isn't a factor.I have six fans in the case two for exhaust and the case temp is only 38-44c.
I even tried it with the side panel off so there was plenty of cooling.I also have two open pci's next to the card.I think its got to be something simple that I'm missing.
Thanks for the info on performance.

Why don't you try an earlier edition of the Cat Drivers?

And are your 3dMark03/01 scores "in line"? no problems with games?

if it bugged me as much as it bugs you, i'd make a brand new small partition, do a clean O/S install with minimal everything . . . if it STILL ran 4x (and everything ELSE was fine), i'd (finally) forget it. 😉
