Hi there all,

i ´m buying a new rig, and tha 3D card, which one should i get/is better?

-tha Radeon 9800 Pro 256 or tha GeForce 6800 Standard 128 ?

-i want it for playing games, especially FPS, like HL2, FarCry,Doom 3,SWAT 4... and Matrix Online(well not fps), GTA´s (not fps)

tha PC i´m gonna buy :

-P4 3.0 Ghz
-1,25 Gb RAM Kingston
-HD 120Gb Seagate
-SB Audigy 2 ZS
-MotherBoard ASUS P4P800 Deluxe

-Thanks

Nither, the 6800 has 12 pipes, ddr 2, and 128 mb ram which is a big nono. Seriously, imo get the GT for 100 more, its worth it, 16 pipes, 256 ddr3 and simply higher clocks. the 6800 nu just isnt in the same catagory as the GT and Ultra.

Actually the 6800 has GDDR1. If you can't afford $400 for the GT the 6800 would be your next best choice... if you can't afford $250-300 then the 9800 Pro would be the best choice.

Personally, I'f you can't go for the 6800GT then I'd just stay w/ the 9800 Pro. the 6800 IS faster, but its not 100 dollars faster IMO.

the ur saying that i get tha 9800 cuz it s not 100 $ faster?

i cannot get GT, u say i get 9800 but why? 6800 is faster, and more pipelines and more core speed etc.right?.
it isnt 256 but not so important now, and in the benchmarks i ve seen a lot , tha 6800 has better results.unless u go to 1600 rez.well but.
can u specify why should i buy9800? i want the best card with the moeny limit of tha 6800 (it s 330 ? here)

-thanks

I say get a 9800 Pro. By the time there is enough games out needing the power of a 6800GT the price of it will be half of what it is now.

P.S. My 9800 pro has no problems plating Doom3 at 1280x1024 with all the eye candy on ans since the gfx are so good, you dont even need AA/AF on.

Looks like the 9800pro will be dc'd with the advent of the x700 line. So probably good deals to be had for budget systems in the next while. Same with the 5900 line. Now if the big price wars would start for the new stuff.....

I'm saying you should buy the 9800 Pro because its the better buy. For 100 dollars more, true the 6800 is faster, but not enough to justify the 100 dollar premium over the 9800 Pro. Here are benchs from firingsquad.com on Counter-Strike Source.

http://www.firingsquad.com/har...rce_midrange/page7.asp (1600x1200 w/ 4xAA/8xAF is 30.1fps for the 9800 Pro)

http://www.firingsquad.com/har...trike_source/page5.asp (1600x1200 w/ 4xAA/8xAF is 37.1fps for the 6800)

To me, 7fps for 100 dollars more is not a good buy, but spend an extra 100 more and you can buy the 6800GT that doubles the performance of the 6800 vanilla. Since you said you can't afford a 6800GT the next logical choice is the 9800 Pro. So just save yourself the extra 100 and buy the 9800 Pro.

That's only partially true. Nobody NEEDS AA or AF on in any game, but it sure is nice. And to me, AA and AF are eye candy... and a 9800 Pro definately will not run Doom 3 with 4XAA and 16XAF with no problems, not even at 1024x768.

9800pro, 6800nu, and 6800gt are good cards, all have a good price/performance ratio - get what you can afford. Aside from that, two things really jumped out at me - the p4 and the ram. Do yourself a favor and get an AMD Athlon64. They're cheaper, faster, and more future-proof. And why get 1.25gb ram? Get 1gb.

WTF are you smoking? how is that a no no? another fine example of n00b wandering in these board offering "advice". they are all the same. they think their sh!t dont stink, and they are always right. remember peteroy? the n00b currently in my sig, and countless others(inluding this bumbling idiot). :|

end rant.

Hey, just go slit your wrists you sh*t eater. I hate nerds that get mad when you talk smack about there "hardware"

Takes a real big person to come to a tech forum and call people nerds. Bottom line is you don't know wtf you're talking about.

Maybe he meant that 128mb of RAM is a no-no, because we all know that more is better right? I mean he sounds like a guy of discerning taste who bought a 256mb 5200, because he knows that more RAM means it will own! =) In all seriousness, either is a good card, if you can spend the 300 dollars, get the 6800nu, if you can't get the 9800pro with 128mb ram, don't bother with 256 unless you are flashing to XT, which is IMO kinda silly too, since the 9800pro is now at the value pricepoint and putting down more money for neglible perf increase is not the point of value products. And of course if you have money just flying in all directions out of your body, get the GT.

P.S. Get the A64 if you are gaming. P4's just don't cut it anymore, and we don't even have a 64-bit OS for the Athlon's either. When that hits, you get a minor boost (5-10% at max) but that's on top of the practically ubiquitous lead the A64's have over P4's in performance.
