ATI 9700pro new driver problem

I switched from the ti4600 to the 9700 pro thinking that I would get better performance. It's the same in games and worse in 3Dmark. 500 less than the 4600. I know that I shouldn't base it on 3Dmark, but it's a good tool to compare cards.
I'm using the new 3.1 drivers, could that be the problem?
Am I missing a setting in the control panel? I kept everything on default.

try some AA and ansio tests. I know for a fact the 9700 kicks in that dept. Also you probably should reformat when getting a new ati card. those nvidia drivers are hard to get rid of.

I did a reformat. Are the drivers that came with the card (Display driver 7.79) better?

the new drivers are better and the card works fine for me, so there must be a problem somewhere else cause it is a fact that it is better than the geforce4 so saying it sucks doesnt make that much sense

I installed the drivers that came with it and my score went up 2000 points. Did I maybe miss something in the updated drivers install? Should I install the CD first then update them? Or a clean install like Nvidia drivers?

Clean install is usually the best. Most drivers tend to leave some settings behind in your registry, so I'd say that the reminents of the Nvidia drivers are messing with something.

I did a clean install after replacing the Nvidia card.
I installed the new 3.1 drivers = poor score and performance.
I uninstalled the new drivers and loaded the drivers from the CD = much better score and performance.
What's the problem with the new drivers on my system?

Why don't you compare how it performs in a real game rather than a BS benchmark?

I did. I know benchmarks aren't the only test to do, but they give good info.

"ATI 9700pro sucks"
You should go back to using the 4600 then, leave the 9700s to those of us to stupid to realize it "sucks".

Benchmark the 9700 Pro in 3dmark 2K3 and then test the Ti4600 on that same program. Now see how your precious Ti44600 does, and what info you can learn from this new benchmark.

I could care less if you like the 9700 or not but I would
change the title of the thread because this is flame bait.
You are more likely to get help from something like:
"Need help with my new 9700 Pro" ;)

I know it doesn't suck, the new drivers seem to though. The drivers that came with it work fine. I'm not sure why. Sorry about the thread title, I'll change it.
