ATI 9700 pro problem!

I was getting artifacts while playinig painkiller last night. Today the artifacts showed up on the Windows boot screen with blue dots forming a square pattern. So I uninstalled omega 2.4a and got the latest omega drivers (2.5 whatever). The artifacts still won't go. So I reduced the core speed to 263.4 and memory to 260 something and booted the computer. The Windows boot screen showed up with blue dots. After that nothing. The computer is running but nothing on monitor. What do I do now? Can I reset the radeon? I am fvcked. Somebody plz help me. I only have one PC 🙁

Do you have an older vid card you can use for testing? And why aren't you using Catalyst drivers? They're the latest, and you can download them from ATI's software site, along with Catalyst Control Center; very useful.
Oh, and when did you get your 9700pro?

use catalyst. omega is full of problems. trust us. catalyst will work better. though youtr problem sounds either like a prolonged oc killed my gpu issue or a heat issue.

I had a sapphire 9700 pro that starting artifacting just like that. Ipurchased 9700 pro cooling kit here and poof artifacts were no more. Still have the card in wifey's puter, still runs great. Not sure if the stock HSF was dying or just needed some ram cooling added.

But how do I get rid of omega now?
Is there any way I can reset my video card? I tried to clear the CMOS but thats no help.
I never overclocked the card and I played games like once every 2 weeks or so. I haven't even used this card to its potential. Any ideas? I am thinking of sending this card back and get some low profile video card right now.

Are you using the stock cooler? There might be a heat transfer issue. Try opening the side of your case, and aiming a fan directly at the video card. If the artifacts go away, you'll know that there is a heat problem, you can resolve this by getting a VGA silencer.
VGA silencer (and as a side note if you decide to purchase the VGA silencer you'll want to buy some ceramique to use in leu of the paste that comes with the package)

edit: and don't think underclocking reduces artifacts because it can actually CAUSE artifacts :Q

I always had a fan blowing on the side of the video card. So I doubt it has anything to do with heat.

I had the same problem and I cleaned out the heatsink/fan on the card (had a lot of dust) and the artifacts went away. Now the fan is LOUD and I am thinking about putting all the dust back in so it stops the noise 😉

Is there any way that you can check if the heatsink is actually touching the core or not?
I am looking at the heatsink and it has 2 plastic screws. How did you remove them?
I am not able to get that thing off the card.

How do I check if my 9700 pro is still under any warranty?

Go to Ati's website and check out the warranty faqs. You can enter in the info required and see if they issue an RMA too, usually takes 24hrs for an online RMA.

Also ignore everyone here telling you it's drivers. The card should work on bios and Windows start-up screen no matter what drivers are in there

I've had that happen to me at times (or at least my problem seemed similar) and to solve it I would open the computer, reseat the card and the power cable, and that would solve the problem.

Hopefully yours will be solved as easily.

Good luck!

No I tried that. Its not that kinda problem.

Btw, BR when I tried to use that link, it says invalid P/N number and I am like WTF ?

Can anyone check for me please?

Here is the P/N 1029420610 064787

I tried many a times but its not working so I used a magnifying glass to get the P/N number and still it came out to be the same.

Thank you.

You only use the first part.

What's odd is it doesn't tell you if the product is still in warranty anymore. I just tried mine and it just says what kind of card it is. 😕 Looks like you need to fill up the RMA form before you can find out.

Yeah it didn't say anything about the warranty.
RMAing right now.
Thanks everyone.

I just RMA'd a 9800pro and did'nt get any notification/email till about 24hrs. The website does'nt indicate what if any warranty status is available instantly.

And if your card is a BB Ati but out of warranty, looks like they have a $75 flat out of warranty repair too.

Oh boy... damn that sucks. I bought my video card from someone who sold me fresh from RMA. My heatware showed me this date 05-08-2004. So its about 10 months old @ max. I hope its still under warranty.

I received RMA# at 4:30 today. I ran to the nearby UPS store in no time...
ATI didn't say anything about $75 so I am assuming its still under warranty. Can anyone confirm this?
Well so far so good. Got the RMA # within 24 hours. Lets see if I can get a X800pro as a replacement for 9700pro 🙂

Several people have reported getting 9800pro's for their warrantied 9700pro, but an X800pro... I don't think so 🙂

Are you sure its the video card ...?

Cuz, that can happen on a CPU oc'd too far also ....
Or too high of FSB for the northbridge

Might try going defualt FSB on the CPU if your OC'd ...
See if they are still there...

I plug in a pci video card and I don't miss my 9700 pro. I am sure my video card's RAM was dying of cancer. I went back and did a bit research on rage3d and it seems lot of people had the same problem.
