I had a mx400 and I upgraded to a 9600 pro advantage. All went well I could play battlefield 2 with no problems. I went to play Diablo 2 and it would not load, just kicked back to desktop. So I got the latest video driver and reinstalled Diablo and I was able to get in and play for 10-30 mins. Then it would freeze and eventually the monitor would go black. Then I would have to hard reset. So I called ATI and they went through my settings and said they were fine and that I had a bad card. So I returned it and got a 9600xt. I had since then moved onto playing Guild Wars and it worked good on my mx400. So I changed to the 9600xt and installed the latest drivers and it seemed kind of slow. When Loading it would load one person at a time and then eventually me. this would take 10-20 sec. I could play in one area for a while and then when I try to go somwhere else and get a loading screen it freezes. Sometimes my computer reboots others I get a blue screen with no error on it just blue. I formatted and reinstalled windows so that rules out conflicting drivers. As of now diablo 2 won't even load. I am lost as to what the problem is, but it seams as though it should be a common one.

Well I think I have finally figured it out and just wanted to share with others what I had found. For me the problem was solved when I turned off VPU recover. Ironic that the thing that is supposed to stop your computer from having hard lockups and rebooting is the thing causing it. Anyway if your computer is having frezing, crashing, rebooting or constant vpu recovery then disable it in the ATI control panel. Vpu recovery can be identified by the monitor constantly shutting off and the comes right back. Kind of like it is changing resolutions. If this doesn't work switch agp to 4x instead of 8x. You can also try to turn off write combining in dispay properties. Some other things to try is upping the voltage to you agp slot but I wasn't able to because my board doesn't support that. I hope this helped so others won't spend a week+ finding the answers they need.
