ATI 9500 PRO RESOLUTION PROBLEM

Ater reading all of these reviews about ATI radeon products being better than nvidias current products, I decided to give one a shot, so I purchased a ATI built 9500 PRO and replaced my G4 4200. I imediately ran 3dmark 2003 and saw my score jump from 1613 (slightly overclocked) to 3664. My first thought was SWEET!!!!!!!! But I do have a problem. When I try to play CS 1.5 @ 1600 x 1200 the picture is to big. (Overlay?????) I can play but I dont see all of the picture. I can't see the time at the top nor the money etc.... at the bottom. Its like my screen doesnt adjust properly. I then tried to play GTA Vice City @ 1600 X 1200 but got the same thing. Both games play fine if I move down to the next resolution but thats not an acceptable fix for me.
After reading some of the forums I downloded the utility from driver heaven to help remove all traces of nvidia drivers. Didnt work.
I installed cataylst 3.5 drivers from the get go.
system is
Athlon xp 2400
soltek 75frn2- nforce2
512 ram apacer 2 x 256
samsung 955df 19" monitor
500 watt achieve power supply ( i guess its generic, came with the case)

I would appreciate any help. I would like to think that I didnt purchase a video card for my 3dmark score.

Yes I have ran the reforce. I found a solution. It was in my display settings. Under the display tab, under monitor, it has a circle (use dcc) checked and box under it unhighlighted ? that said maximum refresh rate was 1280 x 1024. I unchecked the dcc and changed it manually to maximum 1600 x 1200. I only tried the desktop and cs, but it did work. Now I will just have to figure out why it thinks my max resolution is 1280 x 1024.Thanks to the two of you for the help.

Thank to the two of you for the help.

Heck,
When I got my Studioworks 995E monitor about 2.5 years ago, I couldn't change to anything higher than 800x600 .
I checked the owners manual & had to edit the .inf file for the monitor so it would match the manual's spec's.
Now it runs correctly.
It's just sad that LG couldn't get the .inf file correct.🙁

I am not sure what is up with mine but it doesnt make any since. When I bring up the monitor menu on the monitor itself and check the refreshrate on each resolution it doesnt say anything about 1600 x 1200. I think that is why my radeon control panel doesnt think I have 1600 x 1200, but I have ran cs, vice city, and RTCW @ 1600 x 1200 on my old geforce card @ 1600 x 1200. Wierd. I paid like $350.00 for this monitor 2 years ago because it was suppose to be sweet. I guess I will just switch it with my other systems monitor. (a $170.00 19inch orion from Sams). When I try to play cs in 1600 x 1200 I get a error message floating on the screen taht says Out of Sync . But when I esc and resume I am able to play. I guess I will keep on searching for a fix or just go with the cheaper monitor.

Do you have the proper driver file installed for your monitor? Otherwise, put the maximum resolution your monitor supports 1600x1200 (your monitor supports this resolution only to 68 Hz refresh btw) and then put the maximum refresh rate your monitor supports (160Hz) into the maximum refresh.

My guess is that with your GF card, it defaulted to 1600x1200@60Hz so it ran fine because it supports that higher resolution at a low refresh (1280x1024 @ 75Hz is the manu recommended btw) but your Radeon card wants to run at a higher refresh, so you have trouble. Lock your refresh with the refresh overide to 60Hz if you insist on running the higher resolution to check to see if thats it.

Thanks rbV5. I tied what you said and it worked. One question though, does forcing the rate at 60 make it 60 hz for all app's. Thanks for all the help.

Yes it does. Now you know what is happening, you can use a tweaker like Rage3D tweak and lock specific refresh rates to specific resolutions so that you can run your game at 60Hz and then have your desktop run a lower resolution at a higher, more eye friendly refresh rate.

Another thing you might want to check. Under 'display properties -> advanced' select the 'display' tab from the ATI control panel tabs. Select the monitor you're using, in the window that opens, deselect the 'use DDC' option, and select your own maximum rez and refresh rate from the options at the bottom of the window. That should help you run at a higher refresh rate than the default 60Hz. I had the same problem with my 17" Viewsonic E771. I officially supported a max rez of 1280x1024 @ 68Hz but could do 1600x1200 @ 60Hz. But when I forced this rez with powerstrip, I got the 'overlay' problem you're talking about. When I disabled the 'Use DDC' option, it worked fine. Of course 60Hz aint good for the eyes, so I upgraded to an 19" NEC Multisync 95, 1600x1200 @ 75Hz and 1280x1024 @ 85Hz 😀
