Im looking to get the best card for value around 100.
I heard a lot of bad things about GeForce Fx 5200 AGP 128mb. Are the rumors true compared to a ATI 9200SE?
Is a Ti 4200 much better than the other 2?
What is the real difference between all these other companies making Radeon 9200se like powercolor, etc. and similary with nvidia's cards? Does it make a difference which brand I get...if yes, which ones are the best?
thanks for ur help

P.S. I want to get good performance on Halo, Max Payne 2, Rainbow 6, GTA to name a few for benchmarks.

i'm in a somewhat similar situation, and from reading benches, etc. the ti4200 is the way to go *IF* you don't care about playing games with aa/ff. here you can see the ti4200 will in general give you much more playable rates (without aa/ff). if you want to play with aa/ff.. then i'd say pony up the extra $50 for a 9600pro

hmm...so ti4200 it is.
thanks a lot.
But which brand should I geT? The 128mb ti4200 ranges from 50 to 200. The cheap ones are Gainward, Inno3d, BFG, and Jaton, while MSI, Asus...etc.
How much do they actually differ? (specifically and also generally for other video cards)
Thanks again guys, by far the most useful site for information.

Also, does the Ti4200 support DirectX 9.0? From what I saw, it only supports 8.1
In that case, is it still better than the others (fx5200, radeon 9200) for 9.0 supported games and future games?

The only video card out of the ti4200, r9200 and fx5200 which support dx9 is the fx5200. The Ti4200 will be faster than all of them whether playing dx8 or dx9 games.

4200 only has DX8.1 hardware support. but the other 2 suck so much, 4200 wins my vote hands down.

You aren't going to get great DX9 performance for $100.
Your choices would be the FX5200 and the Radeon 9600SE. Out of these two pick the 9600SE, the 5200 is crap unless you are upgrade from integrated graphics.

I'd probably just go with the 4200TI if I were you. You can get it for considerably under $100.

BFG is a great brand. Their warranty and tech support are truly awesome (24/7/365 tech support that speaks English, FULL lifetime warranty). If BFG is an option, go with it.

the 5200 may have DX9...dont let it tempt u, that card is so weak it hasnt got enough grunt for DX9

the 4200 beat it in HL2 benchmarks and wouldnt be suprised if it beat in in 3d mark 2003 as the last game (mother nature) doesnt weigh as heavily in the score like the other 3 game tests which are DX7-DX8.1

what about 9600 non-pro ?
It should be in this range, and I heard that 9600 non-pro
right now is using 400MHZ core too(same as Pro version).

Yeah, I checked on those, and I can get the radeon 9600se for about the same price, maybe even cheaper than the ti4200.
For the games I've mentioned, and future games of these sort...would the 9600se be better than ti4200?
Games I am interested in are halo for pc (the reason i am upgrading my ages old nvidia tnt card), rainbow six, max payne. Many benchmarks are based on Unreal, Jedi, etc. which i prolly would never play.
So whats the verdict between 9600 vs 4200?

I would definitely take the 4200 over a 9600se. The se is a completely crippled card and is junk imo. I'd probably also take a 4200 over a 9600np.

Did you read the budget-cards article on the main AT site? If so, you shouldn't even be considering the 9600SE over a ti4200.

Sure the 9600se "supports dx9" in theory, but so slowly as to be useless -- to get acceptable performance in next year's games you'll have to turn down the graphics quality to below the level of the ti4200's faster dx8.1 rendering.
