ATI 9200 and low FPS

hey guys,
if anyone would know anything about video cards or hardware in general it would be this crew. check out my boogle. i am on a P4 2.4 cpu and an ATI 9200 vid card with 128 mb. im playing CS and all im getting is around 30 to 50 at the most fps. is this normal. i know it should be doing at least 70 to 80 fps shouldnt it. i downloaded the latest drivers (catalyst) but i dont know how to tweak it out. come on guys, be a pal and help me out.
i want to get some good kills in.

NOTE::::::: i forgot to mention that i was using 256mb of ram and i am a idiot when it comes to comps

You should be getting the max 99 fps most of the time.

Try using these commands in console:
ati_npatch 0
ati_subdiv 1

If that doesn't help, perhaps try these drivers.

Also, what resolution are you running at? I think CS runs badly at 1600x1200.

disable AA and AF (of course)
I have a close to identical system, except its a 9000 Pro. I get 100fps unless theres 10 people on screen.

On that card, I'd turn on 16xAF and leave it on. To expand on what FotN and clicknext said, type the following once you're in a game:

~fps_max [your monitor refresh rate] <ENTER>
ati_npatch 0 <ENTER>
ati_subdiv 1 <ENTER>
~

And tell us if that helps. You should be using OpenGL as your renderer.

I heard that all the 9200 is, is a radeon 9000 non pro with agp 8x, is this true, if so, it is a little faster then a gf4 mx460.

Yes the Radeon 9200 is just a R9000 with agp 8x, it's not a terrible video card but it is slow.

I used to get 100 fps in CS on a PCI Radeon 32MB (installed as a Radeon 7200), so that 9200 is plenty fast for HL\CS. Just make sure you're using OpenGL and not Direct3D or software rendering.

I hope you don't mean that it's a dx9 based card, cause it's only dx8 based. Basically any dx8 card will "work" with dx9.0b.

fine...I am getting flamed....thanks anyway..will not post ever again.

Just ignore them,we all have been flamed at one time ,Elite members, myself even Mods, you won`t be the first or the last well not until Mods get real mean 😉.

🙂

ok,
i downloaded the catlyst drivers and turned off the truform in the open gl tab in advanced properties. i changed the refresh rate, typed in fps_max 85 in the console, typed in ati_npatch 0 and ati_subdiv 1. couldnt disable AA(?didnt know what or where it was) and disabled AF (really it just asked if you would like to change it to application prefrence).
i did all this and im only getting 60 fps solid. and it doesnt have funky colors like green outlines and large pixels.
nothing will bump this up?
thanks for you help guys i appreciate it.

Are you using OpenGL rendering (in CS Video preferences)? First, try enabling Triple Buffer in ATi's Control Panel. Vsync may still be enabled, and triple buffering will help framerate in that situation.

I also suspect your monitor refresh rate is at 60Hz. Try using the refresh rate override (Display Props > Settings > Advanced > ATi Displays > Monitor > "Same as Desktop"), or Google for and use ReForce.

Also, tell us what the ATi SmartGART tab says (what AGP speed, if FastWrites are off).

i get sad when i see people get such nice cpus and such a cheap video card....especially when the main concern turns out to be a game thats 5 years old

not to flame, or be too offtopic...but what makes someone get such a nice high-end cpu and crap out on video? i know the card was prolly 70 or 80 bucks
but i wouldnt put less than a gf 4 4200 128mb in a machine with a pentium 4 in it. and those can be had for ~$100

He could be like me (like I did when I didn't know any better) and could have gotten a budget Dell, Gateway, or somesuch that does not have an AGP slot but is equipped with a fairly fast CPU (he did mention that he was not exactly computer savvy). That said, if he has said hypothetical pc, then his video card could be one of the newer 128mb 9200SE PCI cards that are clocked at 200/166(333) and are saddled with a 64-bit memory interface.

Still, even if he does have a pc like I described, it should be plenty fast enough to run CS with good framerates. So, it must be something else altogether that is causing his low fps.

dont worry, your not flaming....... my post that is. heres the story. its not my comp but my brother-in-law's. hes in the airforce and those guys seriously have alot of money on their hands because he bought it from a guy he works with for a 100 bucks cuz he was going to korea. the guy bought it because it was the standard when he got it. my bro-in-law loves cs and he was playing with 20 to 30 fps. when i went to go check out his vid card i thought the fps was low for what it is.
so long story goes "its what he got from anopther guy"

fastwrites are off and the refresh rate is now at 85. but i cannot find this triple buffer of which you speak.

If you are using Windows XP you need to get a program to force the refresh rates higher. 60hz is the XP default for OpenGL applications (and 75 for D3D I believe). Reforce is the best I've found, search for it on google (try "reforce" "refresh").
