ATI 850XT: overheating

My 850 seems to be overheating when I play certain games. It has not been OCed and runs at stock speeds. The ATI catalyst driver pops up a warning saying that the card is overheating and when I check the control center I see temps in the mid 80s. The fan seems to be working fine though (spins up and down as temps change), should I try to RMA it?

Is there any software that can display GPU temps as an overlay in games like fraps for FPS?

Quite strange, you should uninstall the drivers, use Driver Cleaner and try to reinstall the drivers to see if that glitch goes out. Also you should check that you fan doesn't have much dust, my single slot X800XT PE runs between 75 to 85C and have no problems, is strange that your Dual Slot solution is running in such temperatures, even though is quite high for both cards, but as far as I know, damage to the core will happen in temperatures above 100C, but for me above 90C is an issue.

Use a program like ati tray tools, ati tool, or riva tuner to log and monitor the temps while you're gaming. For the x800 series, 80C and above will often result in artifacts and instability. Clean out your case and video card from any dust, and if that doesnt help, you can always buy a cheap AC silencer or the zalman vf700 cooler to replace the stock cooler.

I just purchased an AC Cooling for like $20. I will try to see how quiet it is once I do something with my 7900GTO (now GTX) :D. Anywhoo, the stock cooler was too loud for me. I ordered the AC cooler but in the meantime I got teh 7900GTO and the my X850XT PE has been lying uselessly after the installation for now.
