Ordered one of the Anandtech 'Hot Deals' the $114 ATI Radeon 8500 LE 128 DDR retail gamepack [ with free Belkin Nostromo gamepad].

First, the ATI DOES have a better image quality than the nVidia GeForce 4 cards.

Second, it score fairly well for an inexpensive card. I'm at 9797 on 3DMark 274.5/ 274.5 Mhz

And 10179 3DMark2001 SE at 299.5/ 299.5 Mhz.

For a bargain v card, on a bargain mb, with a bargain CPU, in a bargain case/PSU I cannot complain.

This Chieftec case is awesome ... it deserves an A- , and the PSU seems worthy of a solid B+ score. lot of case/PSU for $65 :)

Gigabyte GA-7VRXP v2.0 F9 modded

ATI Radeon 8500 LE 128 DDR 274/ 274 Mhz

that is a great score!

But I had to pipe in with a blurb about image quality. dont forget that Nvidia does NOT make there own cards. its up to the actuall card manufacturer to determine the quality of the video output. We cant forget that the Leadtek Ti series Geforce 3 and 4's have Excellent 2d, I've heard on multiple occasions that only the parheilia is truly superior quality and it only happens at "extreme" resolutions. (I'm not sure about the 9700 in comparasion).

so to word it differently,

Many cards using nvidia chipsets have lesser image quality then comparable cards made by ATI or Matrox, But some cards made by specific manufacturers using the geforce chipsets have equal (and sometimes better) image quality.

Hey 1313,

Glad the deal worked out for you. I was wondering, did you get a card with 3.3ns memory or 3.6ns? I ordered the card from buy.com and got 3.6ns. Just wanted to see if that was the norm. Also, how does stability work at 300/300. I hope to get mine up to that mark.

I'm kinda at a quandry. I have a new ti4200 128 card and the Radeon, and I'm not sure which I'm gonna put in. I can't go wrong with either I guess. I was going to save one for another computer, but it'll be months if not a year before that's built. However, right now I'm leaning to the ATI. Generally, my setup will be the same as yours. An 1800 athlon, same Gigabyte board, 256 meg 2700 ddr, and a 60 gig WD hard drive. The case and power supply will be the same too :)
