ATI 8500 fan noise

The fan on my 8500 is starting to make some noise. IS there anything I can do (besides replacing it) to make it quieter.....ie: oil it? It seems to make kind of a squeal, and then sometimes goes away. Thx.

You can oil it or replace it with passive heatsink. I took the lazy route and simply unplugged the fan on my wife's 9100 as she doesn't game much if at all. I may replace it with cut up cpu heatsink I've laying around if I ever feel like it.

Remove the fan assy from the heatsink. Flip it over and remove round self sticking fan pinion cover to expose fan pinion/sleeve bearing. Place a small drop of your favorite lube on the pinion/sleeve bearing and either lightly blow on the fan to spin it and work lube into bearing surfaces or spin by hand.

Wipe up any excess lube, replace sticky cover and re-install fan to heatsink. You should now have a quite fan 🙂

Yeah Killrose's solution worked for me.. I used WD-40. I know it's not the optimal choice but oh well, still worked. The noise came back after a few months though.

Apply a tiny drop of oil. FYI, I think WD40 evaporates, as it isn't so much a lubricant as a cleaner. You're probably better off using 3-in-1 or something like that. Fat lot of good thta did me, tho, as the noise from my 9100 fan came back within weeks. I had Vtek send me two replacements before I just took the fan off completely, to no apparent ill effect (I have decent case airflow, though).

Anyway, Google "dans data oil" for instructions (the first link).

Since the 8500 has no holes to mount the clip screws to, you can't use an Artic Cooling Silencer with it. Anyone know what you CAN use with it? thanks....

Sorry, bro, i was in your position a few months ago. I sighed, and then replaced it with a Radeon 9800pro.

the apollo 8500 has no heatsink, just a bare chip. none of the pics are supposed to show any mods it is a picuture of how it came out of the box and #36, a 128mb 8500 clearly is bare.

use a sapre cpu cooler and some duct tape. hell, i duct taped a 80mm fan to my rage pro for years. got a great oc out of it too.

Anyway if the fan is making the noise, it's gonna die soon - thats what happened on my old 9000pro. But after it happened, i just unplugged the fan, and used the card witout it, and it worked fine.

To those that are running an 8500 or 9100 series video card w/o a fan. What cpu , case, etc, are you running? thanks....

Barton 2500+ w/ stock heatsink inside cheap $15 generic case with zero case fan. The PS is 350W Fortron FSP350 with single 120mm speed controlled fan set at the lowest speed setting.
