ATI 8500 AIW + Flat Panel...Do I NEED to use a DVI cable?

I just installed an ATI AIW 8500DV in my buds pc. He has an 18" iiyama flat panel, and the first couple of boots, I was getting no signal. Then it started working. Now 3 days later, there's no signal again. Right now it's using a standard monitor cable and the included converter. Since it's a flat panel, so I need to use a DVI cable? Or is the card just flakey?
