ATI 7500AIW problems

Friend of mine has an ATI AIW 7500 64Mb PAL card from Hercules (E-bay), and XP Pro, having troubles getting it to do anything without hanging. He has the latest ATI drivers (MMC 8.8, Catalyst 3.10, DAO 8.1) but if you start the TV application, the splash screen appears, and the program hangs- ATIMMC.exe taking up 99% CPU time.

The only way to get rid of that windows is to use the remote to kill what it calls the "foreground window" (splash screen) and then use Task Manager to kill off the offending program.

The program works on a clean install if you install in a certain order, but Windows updates some files itself without telling you what. He also has DirectX 9 instead of 9b; apparently there's some bug with the AIW cards and 9b but I don't think that applies here.

Anybody got any ideas on what file is being updated, or what is updating said file(s)?

Cheers!

What operating system? When was the last time it was reinstalled? Are there driver remnants lying around?

I have this card running under Windows 2000 and XP and it works as advertised. I suspect the OS is cluttered with crap.

Okay, it's XP Pro, and it's a fairly recent installation (a few days), and he says that it just stopped working. I don't have many details but I can pass stuff onto him on email, as he's 70miles away :)
He's going to reinstall again, but I did get a preview of the capture working using Windows Movie Maker when I was there. ATI's MMC still hangs though. Occasionally you'll get a message about an unspecified error, sometimes nothing.

I'll let you know what happens once he's reformatted, or at least try and get him to register ;)

Is this a recent computer or a computer newly upgraded to XP? I suspect there might be a hardware problem either with the video card or the system itself. These apps do put a decent load on the system and it's quite possible it's triggering a hardware defect.

Did your friend follow the ATI installation instructions? Things have to be uninstalled and installed in a certain order.

Yes, we installed WME9, no difference.

I'm just puzzled as to why MMC refuses to open, as it does work fine with a clean install....
