I've been trying to migrate to linux for years, finally with Ubuntus latest, my 7500 works out of the box at 1024 lcd resolution. This was a major hassle for me in the past, and i've abandoned quickly back to windows.
That being said, 7.10 looks like a keeper. After 3 days, i have no desire to boot Vista or XP for my rudimentary home needs. anyway

I really have no desire to spend countless hours to learn the inner workings of the operating system, compile etc, but to use, and slowly understand whats going on behind the scene. I just want it to work out of the box, and have it become familar thru use.
I think this is the acid test for the masses, and close to realization with this distribution.

Ive installed compiz and advanced setting show in "Appearance", but cube doesn't seem to work. I have a feeling its pebkac, but as a linux infant im not sure.
Thanks!

Do the other desktop effects seem to work? Wobbly windows etc?

Can you open up a terminal and post the output of:

glxinfo | grep direct

I've got a desktop with an nvidia card and it works beautifully. I have a laptop with a 9700 mobility and I am having major problems trying to get hardware rendering to work.

Do you have 'System | Preferences | Advanced Desktop Effects Settings'? Also try hitting Alt-F2 and entering 'ccsm' (without the quotes) in the box and click Run.

My problem was not knowing I needed 4 workspaces. Ubuntu 7.10 default is 2, and also the ctrl~alt click and hold left mouse button drag move.

Ha, oh yeah, I thought that was kinda slick the way it flipped the desktop around when you only have 2. I actually use 3 desktops right now.

Yep. Happened to me too. I didn't figure it out until I started looking at the key bindings for different effects. Glad ya got it working. :)
