They debuted at that price just because they were the fastest cards at their time. 5870 it's not all the time faster then GTX 295 and 4870X2, so for ATi to charge 600$ for it, would be idiotic. If they could have made it some 20-25% faster then it is today, then it would surely have been more expensive then it's now.

The 5870 idles so low power even if a second GPU (worst case scenario) doubled the idle power, it would still idle lower than a 4870 or 8800GT.

sorry if this is umping, but id just like to ask a question about this. Doesnt Display Port allow for a higher resolution than HDMI, 2560 x 1600 vs 1920 x 1080?

i think id rather have a 30" apple cinema doing 2560x1600 than a 1080p tv.
