Is the 5800 series on track for Q2 release or Q1? I'm really liking ATI lately and either going to wait for that, or buy a 4870 1GB. What are a few of the more quiet 4870s on the market today? I'm mainly looking at the Asus right now.

Powercolor, Asus, Sapphire, and MSI have non-reference coolers IIRC. I think the reference cooler does a good job of cooling but is set up for quietness so it runs hotter unless you up the fan speed a bit. The XFX 4870 I got had the reference cooler but since my comp is watercooled it was loud for me and I ended up watercooling it(I guess it's subjective but I can actually hear hard drive seeks so I prefer my comp very quiet). And the best thing about the reference cooler is it exhausts hot air out of the case....none of the non-reference coolers do that. Also, the mem and VRM cooling becomes a problem with some of the non-reference coolers (I don't think the Asus version comes with any cooling on the ram).

About the 5800 series...I think it's too early to tell if it's on track.

Not a good idea, because, you can't really cool the voltage regulators enough with this cooler.

A thermalright hr 03 + this: http://www.zalman.com/ENG/prod...oduct_Read.asp?idx=335 would work better.

Probably an Accelero S1 would also work with that zalman heatsink, if there is enough space to install it. These would be silent solutions, but the heat is thrown inside the case, so...

I'm too lazy to change any cooler. I might, if the result was really nice, but surely someone makes a 4870 that doesn't spin up loud. I dont care if the hot air is in the case or out the back. I'm not that picky just want one that doesn't spin up really loud even when it's working hard.
I had a 8800GTX before and if possible that'd be as loud as I'd want to go with. When it spun up it was ok but annoying. Right now I'm using a 8800GT and I don't find it loud at all (people used to complain how loud the 8800GT was and I have an early version).

Which of these is the quietest at load?

I'd go with the HIS non-reference version if all you want is quiet...it actually has memory cooling unlike the Asus. The best would be the reference one but if you want it very quiet then that HIS would be my choice.

If your going to buy a 4870, XFX is the only brand with the lifetime warranty so that is something to consider. I know for a fact that the Visontek model is not very loud, one of my good friends has this card an it seems very quiet even when he games (1680 res) in more recent games like L4D an Farcry2
