Are the typical board partners launching this with DDR5?

I thought I read somewhere ATI was keeping the DDR5 for a "built by ATI" card.

^^^^^^^

You mean if ATI was to sell their own 4850 it would have GDDR5. That's what I remember reading, but I can't find the link.

Yea that's what it was. Well that's good. Now to pick a brand. Prolly be Visiontek or Asus. I hope they both have product at launch.

Man this thing needs to launch already. This thread's getting boring.. :D

Looks like it's scaling pretty nicely.

Edit: removed wrong link.

HOLY Fu** thats awesome! The only game they need to fix is crysis now- which can only go so far I guess with amd structure.

damn, thats how you do multi-gpu scaling right!

wow, this is a really good news to me as am getting 4870 x2 in a couple of weeks. This means amd took care of driver optimization, let's see if nv can beat that.

From techpowerup

Chinese hardware website ChipHell put up preliminary comparisons between the Radeon HD 4870 X2 and a Crossfire X setup using two of these cards to compare the scaling efficiency of these cards when paired in a Crossfire X setup. Readings were put up on a chart. The cards seem to scale up to 104% and in several tests the performance scaling stayed above 50%. The average performance increment a pair of these cards has over a single card is noted to be 66%, on launch drivers. It is general belief that entry-level and mid-range cards scale more efficiently than high-end cards. Scaling efficiency for these cards are high even with settings such as 4x AA, 8x AF enabled. The HD 4870 X2 is expected to be formally launched this Tuesday the 12th.

Merged into main thread.

Not sure about crysis. 4 rv770s vs. 3 gt200bs will be a great showdown to watch in the next few months. 4 rv770 vs. 3 gt200 should be exciting to see next week. Depends on wether they can do something with Cat 8.8 Final. tri sli is more $ and you have to use Nv mobo. ;(

Simply the 4870x2 is just a monster of a card, and 2 is just insane. I really want 2 now, but one should do just fine for a while.

Yeah the only big difference I think is that the R700 is supposed to have 2GB of memory - 1GB per core, which would help at high resolution RAM-limited settings.

R700 CFX means 4gb of video memory. Sheesh. I still only run 2gb for the entire OS. hahahahahahahahah. This reminds me of bill gates saying nobody will ever need a 200kb hard disk in their system.

Wow awesome. I don't think I'll have the $$ for two but one 4870X2 will be enough for me :).

am i the only one with a different "in-between" plan ?

i already have a 4870 .. i want to add a 4870x2 for an X3 solution
- i doubt that 512MB vRAM on my current card holds me back at all - at 19x12

HD4870x3 should equal GT280 SLi for a bit less money. We shall see.

You'll limit all 3 GPUs to only 512MB, not really a plan for most.

How does it scale more than 100%?
Magic drivers from the red team.

R700 CFX means 4gb of video memory
Actually it's 1GB between 4GPUs, because the data get duplicated between each 1GB. Would be really nice if it could share the whole 4GB.
