ATI 4870 Driver Issue

I think this is probably a driver issue and am wondering if others are having similar problems.

I'm using Catalyst 8.6. When playing Crysis there is no option for 1920 x 1080 which is my panel resolution. I think the highest it goes is 1600 x 1200 but to display right I have to go down to 1280 x 720. I never had a problem with my NVidia cards. Also for some reason it scales the frame down to where the picture is framed(has black bars around the picture).

When I play Assassin's Creed I also have the scaling issue but not a resolution problem.

I'm using Vista64 but I had none of these problems when I was using my 8800GTS G92. Is there a way to fix this or do I just have to hope that the next driver release will address these issues. Makes me want to go back to an NVidia card and I may if the price on the 280 drops a little more.

I don't have Crysis and cannot test this myself. However, I do have a 24in panel and can personally verify that every game I've tried, that has WS support, will run fine at 1920x1200. The only driver issue that I'm away of is the fan speed issue, which should be fixed in the 8.7 Catalyst drivers later this month.

I have Crysis but I haven't bothered to install it. I got Assassin's Creed yesterday and installed it. I do get 2560x1600 but for some reason the game doesn't launch to full screen, but Window'ed 2560x1600. Thought it was a driver issue then installed on the other machine (8800 GTs) and same thing happens. I don't know what issue you're experiencing with Assassin's Creed, do you experience the same thing?

Or anyone with Assassin's Creed and Vista 64bit? Why is the game launching in Window mode?

Edit: Alt+Enter fixed it.

i have the 4850 and loaded up crysis and will work fine in 1900x1200. Have you tried 1680x1050?

Also have you tried installing the official monitor drivers for it?

Crysis has a horrible implementation for resolution selection. That drop-down menu is actually a drop-down and scroll menu, so you need to scroll down within the drop-down to get the last two resolutions on a 24" monitor.

As for Assassin's Creed, there shouldn't be any problems with resolution. DX10 mode does launch in windowed mode for some reason no matter what, but DX9 launches in full windowed mode. As Lopri pointed out, Alt-Enter fixes windowed full screen vs. non-windowed. Its also a handy trick for games that crash/lock-up with Alt-Tab. I used to get lock-ups with 174+ drivers on my G80 GTX with Alt-Tab in some games, but not with Alt-Tab.

I don't get an option in Crysis above 1600 x 1200 and it doesn't scroll down further.
On my Catalyst Control panel the highest resolution I can choose is 1600 x 1200. If I choose the force option I can force 1920 x 1080 but when I run the game the results are the same. Vista will allow me to choose 1920 x 1080 but the problem is still there. Also no resolution above the 1280 x 720 scales correctly. Maybe it is an install issue, I guess I will try removing everything and cleaning and then reinstall and see what happens

I'm getting crashes in Assassin's Creed with my 4850.

I think AMD has horrible drivers support. The 48xx series cards have been out for a month now, and AMD has not officially listed these cards on their drivers list yet? Which makes me think that AMD has not thoroughly tested their current Cat 8.6 drivers with the 48xx series cards.

LOL it got worse with the 8.7 beta, because my screen flickers like poltergiest (sp) when starting AC.
I'm a bit tired of installing, removing, cleaning, re-installing, different versions of drivers...

Now I would not be surprised if a small Taiwanese company releases some obscure product without drivers listed on their site... but for godsakes this is AMD/ATI releasing a major product line here. I have a feeling that some of their key programmers may have left. No way would the old ATI would be this slow to release new drivers for such an important product line.

I tried removing the drivers and reinstalling but it didn't work. I removed all ATI drivers, Microsoft Visual C, and all the ATI folders and files from Program Files and users. I then used Driversweeper and cleaned all Nvidia and ATI video drivers in Safe Mode. I went back to normal Vista and reinstalled the Hotfix. Now it wouldn't load the video driver or CCC. I had to go back and load a restore point to get back to where I was. I really think the problem is just in the Radeon Drivers.

Installed my 4870 this morning on my Vista x64 as well,I used the Hotfix drivers 8.6,everything so far is working great, played some EQ2 at max settings,Mythos,UT2004 no problems to report.

When you install the 8.6 hotfix drivers(its a full package that comes with CCC and drivers so you don't need the official 8.6 drivers from AMD's site) make sure you reboot your PC.

Mem, What PSU are you using?, Using the adapters? Also can you run 3dmark06 and 3dMarkVantage no problem?

I'm using my OCZ 700W GameXtreme PSU which is a year old,has 2x PCI Express power leads coming from the PSU for the video card so I just plugged them in,using DVI cable to my WS LCD monitor.

Have you tried FurMark? very demanding so will show any problems, run the stability test ,it even shows your GPU temps too .

FurMark download link. .

I have an Ultima 1000 Power Supply but I have't tried FutureMark. I've done Prime95 and OCCT quite a bit. I don't think it is a power problem as everything runs good but my resolution and scaling in CCC aren't functioning 100 percent. It seems like I always have computer problems.

In HL2 there are 2 options, one is for resolution and there is another for the aspect ratio. Unless I set the ratio to 16:10 the 1920 resolution doesnt appear, maybe Crysis has the same thing?

Ok..well my problems have all disappeared..I think it was because of some old Nvidia drivers hiding away somewhere running amuck.

If you had an NV card before use driversweeper at Guru3d.com I used a similar program but it DID NOT find nearly all of the NVware.

This has fixed all my weird problems.

First thing I did when I received my Gigabyte 4870 card was to uninstall my Nvidia drivers via Control Panel, rebooted into safe mode and ran DriverSweeper to remove any leftover Nvidia files, shut pc down after and installed my 4780 card, however on bootup 3 Nvidia dll files were still trying to load on my Vista x64 but I was able to remove these via Regedit.

Nvidia needs to work on its uninstalling program, anyway my 4870 is working great and I have stress tested it via FurMark plus a lot of games, very impressed with the image quality etc...
