ATI 4870 1GB ???

I think there is one coming out in the next couple of weeks. I don't know the details but I'm also interested.

I'm very interested in this too. We know the 1GB 4870's are coming soon, just no exact date has been released AFAIK. I'd say by the end of August would be a safe bet. I'm waiting until then. Unless the price of the 512MB 4870 drops to $200...then I'm getting one!

I'll make a guess based on past experiences that the 1GB card will sell for $300-$325 (maybe more initially, based on supply vs. demand) and the 512MB version will settle down to the $200-$225 price point.

8800GTs were $300 when they came out too and now they're $150. 😉

I wonder what the performance difference would be at higher res (1920x1200, 2048x1536, 2650x1600 etc). 512MB is a bit stingy for such a powerful card imho, especially with today's and tomorrow's games (read Far Cry 2)...

I agree with you; today's games are using more than 512MB at high-res. Games like FC2 will no doubt use almost all of the 1GB of memory, if not close to it. The memory bandwidth that GDDR5 offers is just insane. Just imagine 1GB of it....mmm, speedy textures!

I think AMD released the 512MB version to whet our collective appetite for the HD4870 with the intent of then really cashing in with the 1GB version.

Personally, I'll be waiting for the 1GB version. I don't think the price of the 512MB version will get down "that insanely low" before the 1GB part comes out anyway. I.E. if tomorrow the 512MB was $200, I'd have to get one immediately.

The only sucky part about this is I'm already only able to see 2GB/4GB under WinXP 32bit, so 2x 1GB video cards are going to bump me down to 1GB of system memory if I go Crossfire again. I may be switching to Vista 64bit exclusively in the near future.
