Because according to the released specs and unofficial scores, it is going to be the same thing as a two 8800GTs in SLI, but at a lower clock speed. hence two eVGA 8800GT SLi would actually be faster. The expected price is also about the same as getting to 8800GTs.

It's supposed to use the GTS chips with 128 shader processors. Not sure if that will compensate for the lower frequencies.

1 ATI 3870 x2 cost around $400
1 nV 8800 ultra cost around $700

a SLI will setup to beat the 3870 x2 will cost around $1400
and CrossFire setup can easily pass the Sli setup for around $800

that's a huge price gap 3870 x2 is the way to go until something better comes along, and that means 2009

if you don't need a video card now, don't bother with either one, wait for 2009 new batch of GPUs
if you need a new video card now, then get 3870 x2, or better yet get 2 3870 x2 for the price you'll pay for a 8800 ultra
and you can have a QUAD cross fire, to go along your Duo2Core Extreme Quad :D
