Ati 2600xt gives black screen when playing mpeg 2

I just installed a HD 2600XT and I thought it was working fine until I tried to play a DVD. The monitor went black and I got a message saying no signal on my DVI input. I tried to play some other videos and my Mpeg 4 stuff would play fine but anything that was mpeg 2 would give me the same result. The screen goes black but I can still hear the sound. I have to hard reboot the computer to get it working again.
I have tried several diffrent codecs and all of them give the same result. Do I have a bad card and I should just give up or is it still a driver or codec problem? I have the newest ATI drivers installed for the card. Thanks for any help.

It sounds like HDCP is trying to engage. What software are you playing these videos with, and what codec are you using?

I have tried a few different codecs and players. I have tried WMP and media player clasic. I have used Nvidia, ATI, Nero, and Microsofts mpeg 2 codec. I use a Vista mediacenter decoder utility to set the default codec. My monitor is BenQ G2400W if that makes any dfference. Thanks

Wanted to add that .wmv files also play fine.

Just for kicks & giggles, grab MPC-HC, enable & configure the MPEG-2 decoder to not use hardware acceleration (DXVA) and then get back to us. I still think it's HDCP related, but it may very well be a quirk with hardware acceleration too.

I downloaded MPC-HC and installed it. I was not 100% sure how not to use hardware acceleration but went to options and output and selected the Old Render option for output. I was able to play mpeg 2 files with out any problem but the quality was not very good. I also tried to play the same file in WMP and it did not work and I had to reboot. Thanks for the help.

Options->Internal Filters->MPEG-2 Video (it's on the right hand side). Set your output option to VMR9 Renderless.

I set it up how you said above. While playing the video this time, it acted just like it did before and went to a black screen and I had to reboot to get it to work. So if it didn't use hardware acceleration and still had the problem, then that means it is HDCP related then and not a problem with the card? Thanks

It doesn't seem that way. The codec needs to support HDCP, MPC-HC doesn't support HDCP so it's not engaging it. At this point I'm not sure what's going on, it looks like there is something wrong with DirectShow perhaps. But I would imagine that as long as you found something that works, you're satisfied with it. Trying to solve the problem will likely be more effort than just ignoring it.

What I tried didn't crash my system but the quality was not very good and I was wanting to us VMC for playback. I might just switch cards and not worry about it. I'm only out $30 if this card does not work and might spend more than that in Advil banging my head against the wall trying to figure out why it is not working. Thanks for the help.

You could also try VLC, which doesn't use hardware acceleration.
