Since the Best Buy deal for this card (which I bought as is on its way to me) I have been wondering if I will see a lot of performance difference with this new card. Even though it was a good deal it's still a good bit of cash.

I've tried to find some benchmarks to compare but with all the different CPUs, chipsets, manufacturers etc it is difficult to conclusively determine what boost I might see. I mean, I know there will be a boost...but is it worth the cost?

I am running an AMD X2 4600 (still 939 :( ) so that might also be a factor for CPU limitation.

I don't game A LOT, but when I do I want a good experience. Still haven't finished Obvlivion, and I am thinking about getting STALKER, which I hear is pretty hard on vid cards.

Get the 8800GTS only if you need HDCP and Directx-10 card for future gaming .
Otherwise you won't see much improvement from the current 1900XT, IMO.
In my experiences, I play lot of flight sims such as FSx.
The 8800GTS is such a joy card to play with this game.
I'm much over 60fps with 2aa/4af (1680x1050) instead of low teens fps on the 7900GTO card.

The 8800gts is a FAIR bit quicker then the 1900xt, depending on what resolutions you play at it could be worth it. If you game under 1600*1200 it might not show you to much of an increase. The eye candy will look better though, and it is more futureproof. Stalker is pretty hard on cpu's btw, and on videocards :p You won't be really cpu limited with that chip though, especially if you can squeeze out anohter 200-300mhz.

Use that to compare games.

AHH... wait till August. Nvidia may announce new GPU revision. 8900GTS or 8900GX ??. They really need to fix SLI driver issues and DX10 sli support !!

Wow ? Where did that rumor come from ? The 8800ultra is nvidia's top end card, it's price is allready ridiculously high, and ATI can't touch it. The only rumor so far is the g92, which will be a graphics card in between the crappy 8600gts and the 8800gts 320mb.

Also, he allready BOUGHT it, it's currently shipping to him. Can't really wait, can he ? And what would fixed SLI drivers and DX10 SLI Support do for him ? He isn't putting anything in SLI ? worst ... advice ... ever ....

If you can sell the 1900 for a good price, then it might be worth it.

Wow, thanks for that link. This goes in my bookmarks...

Based on these benchmarks, it looks like there is only a marginal improvement, and frankly not worth the cost. Now if this were a GTX, I would definitely say this was a keeper, but I can find other uses for the $300.

the improvement is significant in DX9 gaming ...

forget tom's - old everything and too general to be really useful

What is your monitor native resolution?

I went from a 7950GX2 to a 8800GTX and I was like, "HOT DAMN, I love these nvidia graphics."

Depending on the game, the 8800GTS is a little bit or a lot faster than the X1900XT. In every case it is faster, but in some games it's 100% faster (very few), in others it's 50%, in some it may be 5-10%.

Overall I'd expect a decent improvement, but overall nothing to be BLOWN AWAY by. Oblivion and STALKER, games you mention, are games where the 8800GTS is significantly faster than the X1900XT.
