ATI 1650pro compared to an ATI 4xxx?

My boss has an ATI 1650pro graphics card for his gaming machine, and wants to upgrade. For sake of comparision, where does a 1650pro compare to an ATI 4xxx series?

Is it equal or better to the ATI 4350? Where would it fit it in the current generation?

Sorry for the noob question but I usually stay within a generation or two when I have video cards.

I don't see the ATi 4350 on there, but the 1650pro is up there. Try and get some comparable scores on the 4350 and you should have your answer.

A 4350 isn't anything much more then a 1650pro. Anyway you take it, these two cards are not card made for gaming.

I looked at Tom's but couldn't find an apple to apples comparision in their benchmarks (since so much has changed since 1650pro days and today) and I realize the 4350 is not something he wants, but I'm not sure his budget. So he might say "I'll get the 4350" and I can respond "You will end up slower with that one, get atleast a 4550 to get a better result." That's what I'm trying to achieve. I'll keep looking

A 1650 pro really isn't *that* bad. It's roughly a 7600GT which would still do ok in older games at lower than 1650x1080. You could probably play HL2 or doom 3 or stuff like that with lower settings. I'd maybe put it roughly a 4550? If you're wanting to play newer games though, I'd get something better. Even a 4650 for like $45-55 would be much better

I thought a 7600gt was much faster than an x1650 pro? I know in games like Doom3 the 7600gt is twice as fast at higher res and settings.

Ok so maybe I should have taken a better look at some benchmarks. Still though a 7600gt wasn't twice as fast in anything really. 25-40% it would seem after a quick look, so maybe closer to a 4350 than I thought


OP, can you try and find out what games he'd like to play better and at what res? even a $75 budget would get him a much better card

My guess is somewhere in between the 4350 and 4550.

If he is upgrading, don't get anything slower than a 4670.

a 7600gt is actually over twice as fast as the x1600xt(same card as x1650 pro) at 1600 in Doom3. http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/imageview.php?image=4614

1600XT=1650PRO=600MHz (590MHz if i remember) core / 700MHz GDDR3 128bit mem con 4ROPs/12TUs/12 SPs (85 gflops, not exactly comparable with todays designs)

1600XT launched in Q1 2006 at $169 and the 7600GT in Q1 2006 at $199 ($169 was not a good launch price, a competitive price would be 149$)

7600GT is 1,5X faster (average perf.) than 1600XT per MHz (but in some games and in some resolutions that 4ROPs is a problem the difference can be a little higher)

DOOM3 is a special case (the engine can show worst results if you overclock you GPU, the game engine was badly designed to perform with ATI cards (lookup table implementation) etc..)

at 1280X1024 2AA 8AF, 1650PRO is around half the speed (average) of a 1950 PRO 256MB.

The 1650PRO should be nearly as fast as a 4550 (600MHz core / 800MHz GDDR3 64bit mem con 4ROPs/8TUs/80SPs (96 gflops) in old games (2004-2006) and slower for newer games (2007-2009) (shading perf. issues)

4850 or 4770 are close to that Price and are very good at current Games. Is there a reason you/he are shooting so low? AGP requirement or something?

I think the fastest AGP ATI card from the 4 series is a 4670 AGP (these are higher priced then PCI-E cards cause they know they got ya by the balls) Maybe like a 3870?
I think there are AGP 9600 GSO's which may be good. There's so many different 9600 GSO configurations I can't really recommend them cause you never know what your gonna get.

Is this AGP or PCI Express? X1650 came in both. There is not much point to the HD 4350/4550 anymore, since the hugely superior HD 4650 can regularly be found for the same price, maybe $10 more at most:
