ive been planning on switching to an A64 setup... but ive been waiting for a socket 754 board based on the sis755 or 755fx and ive been waiting for the a64 3000+

the total cost of board + cpu will be less then an a64 3200+

hehe so it looks like its almost time to buy :D

I doubt it since they advertise that the Athlon-64 has 1 MB L2 cache... if they reduced the cache they probably would have given it another name, like Athlon-64 MX.

If you cannot overclock this to 2.2 GHz AT LEAST, it is not worth of Barton 2500.
I am currently running Barton at 2.3 GHz on NF7-S and this is about as much A64 can put up on 2.15 GHz. I mean benchmarks are comparable. A64 gets edge if you overclock it to 2.25 for example. Not every board can do that and with 3000+ it will be even harder. My K8V originally could not make A64 over 2.2 GHz, it does now with the newest BIOS update. So don't bet on performance.

i totally agree

plus its nice that current socket754 boards will support future/faster A64 cpu's

Looks like a possible good purchase for next year when an x86-64 version of Windows XP is out.

Anyone heard when that's gonna happen? I keep hearing different things, including that it's out, which it isn't.

There's beta copies floating around certain file sharing networks... last I heard from a somewhat reputable source was something this spring.

Applications need to be ported as well. Then it is true, we'll see significant gain. In my chess programs that would be up to 20%. But for now ...
