AthlonXP Retail for non-Oc'er - how's the noise?

Guys,

I may be building a budget system for a friend; considering an AthlonXP 1700+ retail cpu. I'm not going to go into overclocking on this system - he'd rather have a stable system that he doesn't have to worry about. How's the hsf on the retail units? Is it quiet, relatively speaking, or would we be better off going w/ an aftermarket cooler w/ a quiet 80mm fan?

Thanks for your input,

Jeff

The stock units are a little noisy. Try it, if it's too loud, get a gc68 from svcompucycle or galaxy monster from nexfan- same thing. I know, seems too cheap to be any good, but they work nicely, and are a real bargain.

Yes, get an aftermarket hsf. SVCompucycle has the SK6 for 10.00 and you can mount an 80mm Panaflo (ultra-low noise) quiet fan on it for 7.00.

The powersupply, hard drive, and video card fans produce much more noise than the retail XP1900+ in my system.

Yup, my bro's 1ghz PIII is louder than my Athlon XP1700, but that's mostly because of PS fans and not the cpu fan.

i have an athlon xp 1800 w/ retail hsf. i thought it was quiet when i didnt have any of my case fans going. i thought it was quiet but its not the quietest out there.

An aftermarket heatsink with a quiet 80mm fan is probably a good idea. The retail cooler isn't loud, but it isn't that good either. The Thermaltake Volcano 7 with variable fan speed control is a pretty good option. The Volcano 9 is a good choice too, but it is a bit more expensive.

Thanks for all the replies. It looks like that SK6 @ SVC coupled w/ an 80mm Panaflo might be the ticket.

Depends on what else is making noise in the comp and in the room.
I wouldn't buy another hsf yet. You may not notice the difference in noise level.
Use the retail hsf and if it's too loud, then buy a replacement.
But get some Arctic Silver and use it instead of that thermal pad. Otherwise it will be a pain in the a@$ to replace it later.

My parents' PC has the stock cooler from my newer CPU on theirs, and it's loud as hell. I sleep with my PC on, because the 80mm Panaflo M1a is so quiet, but when I go home, I have to turn their computer off even though the only fans in their system is the one on the CPU and PSU.

Never heard of that one. With such a small heatsink, won't the majority of the air be blowing outside the fin area? Sounds like a really bad idea because of the large dead area in the middle of an 80mm fan. I thought it was especially important to get some pressure into the fins on those. I ran mine for a while with an 80mm, 50 cfm fan, but I rigged up one of the square 80-60 adapters to it. It didn't cool as well as the 60mm Delta, so I got an AX-7 heatsink to use with the 80mm fan. This runs about 1-2*C warmer than the SK-6 with 60mm Delta on an overclocked cpu. I would spend the extra ten dollars on the SK-7 and try a slower standard case fan on it.

It's actually the other way around for me. When I got a retail XP2K+, the HSF was the noisiest thing in my system. Of course, all my case fans are undervolted at 5V and my PS is an enermax whisper. Though I don't think the retail HSF is noisy to the point where it's a problem.

For the retail HSF, single notch clip, use a screwdriver to mount.

I thought mine was somewhat loud also. I replaced the 60mm with Aakasa 60 to 80 adaptor and used an 80 mm Vantec Stealth fan. Temps dropped 1-2 c. and somewhat quieter. I also removed the fan from my northbridge because it was also loud. Since my northbridge is so close to the retial hs, I figured that the extra air coming down the outside of the rhs would do an adequate job cooling the nb. I left the thing(heat sink?) that the nb fan screws to on top of the nb. Should I have taken that thingee off?

sbw-

definitely leave the heatsink. Removing the fan is OK, provided that the sink has anything to it at all. Search the forum for <northbridge> for more info....

jhhnn, the ( heatsink) isn't much, it's like just a flat alum. plate w/ mounting tabs for the fan that was on it. My thought that was it would disapate heat better than not using anything at all, considering the cooling that I am getting from the larger cpu fan. Or should I use a better hs? I didn't find anything about my particular setup(stock flat fan mounting plate) when I did a search. Thanks
