AthlonXP overclocking with bridges?

So I have a crappy non-ocing shuttle nforce2 mobo. It can do about 5mhz fsb OC before it crashes.

Is there any way to OC by doing a pencil trick mod on the bridges or something? I saw a guide that shows that the multiplier of the CPU can be changed via bridges. Also I see that certain bridge modifcations can be done by pin modding the CPU.

Most of them seem to be for unlocking the multipliers though.

you should be able to control the CPU multiplier? I had a barton that I could tinker with the the multi on.

it's been a long time since i've done that
But I had done the "pencil trick" on atleast half a dozen socket A athlons
there is a good guide for it (can't remember where now)
the method differs slightly for each stepping if I remember correctly (ie: tbird, palomin, tbred a, tbred b, barton)
it came to be called "L1 mod" on the later XP's because unlocking the multipliers involved only cutting
unless you were wanting to set a specific mult/voltage because your motherboard didn't have bios or dip switches to change things(in which case you'd use conductive trace making material or similar)
also each motherboard might interpret a specific mult differently due to bios implementations ...
asus a7v was among the best and most modded boards at the time
I ran that board from when the original 1GHz tbird came out to the end (~2.6GHz subzero cooled barton)
I can't remember ever having success with the pin mods tho ...
you'll need to do some research, sorry I can't provide links, those bookmarks are long gone by now

Socket A brings back lots of fond memories for me :)

search for "L1 bridge cut" or similar in google

chance are you'd be better off building a $200 system with current refurbished parts than pursuing this imo
athlonxp is dated from both a performance and performance/watt perspective at this point

Didn't AMD start locking the multi on later Bartons?

Very early on actually. Homie probably had an Athlon XP-M, the mobile chips had unlocked multis and would POST happily at 200x11 in Shuttle nForce2 SFFs.

They are still being sold somewhere around here *cough*

A lot of K7 CPUs were locked. I don't recall Bartons ever being unlocked, really.

I also don't know of any of the mobile K7 CPUs being locked. I know some one on XS got a Barton to run at 3.4GHz or so.

Also, mobile K7s were literally hand-picked K7 dies that would operate at lower voltages and lower temperatures. They generally clocked well because AMD went through the trouble of finding a good chip for you.

oh you know what that's what I did, I overclocked my bus to 200 from 166-- it wasn't a multiplier change.

I did that trick a long time ago with a Socket A type. Got about 300Mhz boost from 1.8GHz to 2.1GHz stable with an aftermarket heatsink. Brings back good memories and reminded me how huge die sizes are now compared to the CPU I had last time. :D

Instead of waisting time with a Barton OC , why dont you come zap into reality 2011.

We can help you build a machine that best fit your desires. gl

I agree. Why mess around with something that old. That's like OCing a Coppermine Celeron. Yes, you can do it, but ... given the performance of modern PCs, really, why bother?

For $110 you can get a Core i3-2100 and a mobo at Microcenter. For another $60, you can get 8GB of DDR3 to go with it. Under $200 for a nice modern CPU/mobo/RAM combo. With great performance per watt, too.

Sigh, barton-m, I missed that train sadly. By the time I really got into overclocking barton's were obsolete.
