AthlonXP cores

What are the different cores used in AthlonXP's? Which one's best best/newest? How do I tell which core a certain one uses if I was to buy one at a store?

From Tomshardware : (the comments are mine)
Name | Interconnects | Speeds | Comments
AMD Thunderbird | 6 | Athlon 650 MHz to 1400 MHz | The 1333 and 1400's run pretty hot
AMD Palomino | 7 | Athlon XP 1500+ to XP 2100+ | standard and common
AMD Thoroughbred "A" | 8 | Athlon XP 1700+ to XP 2200+| I think only 2200's are common, runs hot
AMD Thoroughbred "B" | 9 | Athlon XP 2400+ to XP 3400+| The 2400 and 2600 are out, overclock good
(we think) and run cooler than the "A". The 2700 and 2800 have a 333 mhz bus, available ????

Edit:The display doesn't show the columns I made, so I will insert "|" to help

For Palaminos (up to 2100+), the best cores are AROIA/AGOIA Y. Supposedly week 13 is the best, able to do ~1.9GHz at default voltage. I have a AROGA Y week 4 1800+ that does 1.8GHz at default.
With Tbred A's, I imagine that all of them, from 1700+ to 2200+, should be able to do 1.9GHz or so, but probably not much more.
With Tbred B's, it's still too soon to tell, very few people have one of them.

How to tell when you go to the store... good question. I've had this issue before and the reality is that there is a lot of luck involved. If you get a Palamino from newegg.com, supposedly they only sell AROIA/AGOIA (and have great prices to boot 🙂 ). Sometimes they will also guarantee a particular stepping, but for extra $$. If you go to a brick&mortar store, I have specifically requested for a particular stepping and insisted on looking at the cpu before buying. Most stores are cool about this if you don't act like a jerk.

How to tell? Look at the core (or the little sticker on top of the packaging with Tbreds). The first line identifies the cpu (speed, etc). The 2nd line has the stepping and week of manufacture at the beginning, for example AROGA0204 or AGOIA0213 (stepping, year, week). The 3rd line is the cpu serial number. Here, look for a "Y" at the beginning, these tend to be better OC'ers.

Hope this was what you were looking for...

I just got a 2200+ RETAIL, and the product code, etc isnt even on the core! it's on the little brown silicon (i know it's organic, but cant remember what it's called) right below "Assembled in Malaysia" and my core product codes are:

AXDA2200DKV3C 4133753260993
AIRGA0232MPM 1999AMD

so, i have never seen this before, so I dunno what to think. Is it overclockable? and oh yeah, it has some small square on the actual core. It looks garbled. If you want I can take pictures and post in the future what it looks like (the core square, looks like something AMD would do like the embedded subliminal pictures they had in the layered cores? it's actually a very small circuitboard)

wanted to add that the L1 cache doesnt have those little "pits" to deter overclocking.

My PC fried most of my components, and this organization I belong to (hardcore gamers) www.homelanfed.com pitched in and got me some parts. Because I do ALOT of work for them, and they need my PC running 🙂

LOL, let's see, where can I get someone to fry my pc. 😀

Just kidding.

Has anyone been able to find lower speed Thouroughbred cores? AMD was suppose to release an down to .13 micron AthlonXP 1700+ but I havent seen any specific listing for them. Oh well I look some more!
