AthlonXP 1600 AGOIA

Hi All,

I have an AthlonXP 1600, AGOIA stepping. I'm getting readings of mid to high 40's (C) under light load from the on-die thermal diode, running at spec. I'm just wondering if, given these temps, my cooling is inadequate to allow for decent OC'ing results. I currently only have an 80mm intake case fan, but I'm planning on adding a 90mm exhaust fan.

well, it all depends on what your board is--your reading could be a little higher or lower than what the actual temperature is. The only way to tell how much overhead you have for overclocking is to try it--for the most part as long as you have decent cooling, you won't hurt your chip unless you raise the voltage too high--try raising your FSB a few megahertz and see what happens to your temp--my AGOIA runs 40 idle (at 1.4ghz) and when i raise the FSB to 160 (1.68ghz) i get 43 degree's idle. which are both acceptable as long as your system is stable.

Thanks for your reply. FYI my board is the ASUS A7S333, which supposedly actually reads the temp from the chip itself. I guess I just expected a later stepping clocked slower to run a bit cooler. Of course temp readings don't seem to be very consistent, but the readings I'm seeing are reasonably consistent (direct BIOS reading, Sandra and ASUS probe).

I bought an aluminium case in the hopes I would see lower temps - nada. My A7S333 and a Tbird 1.45G was always around 46C and case temp an awful 35 to 36C. Under load CPU up to 50s and case as high as 40C. The Volcano 7+ just couldn't bring it down at medium fan speed.
Therefore I wouldn't waste any more time with additional cooling - let it be those temps are really not that bad. I am still looking around for a Wpcredit PCR file to help with cooling.

Thanks for your comments. Yeah, my board reads 35C as well. Hmmm, maybe the A7S333 just always reads 35/45 no matter what the actual temps. 😀 Anyway, I think I'll still add the exhaust fan, just because it's cheap and not too critical if the fan fails. Don't want to go cheapo with the CPU fan 😱
