There have been a number of threads concerning these drivers and how they help deal with stuttering issues when running games with dual core X2 processors.

Make sure you use the right driver package (there are both 32 bit and 64 bit Windows versions -most users will want the 32 bit version)

I thought I should ask before installing myself.

Thanks.

Yes, the X2 drivers are good, use them.

If you are running WinXP (32 bit) make sure you get the dual-core hotfix and you add the registry keys to enable it. See this thread: http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...atid=28&threadid=1707814&enterthread=y

Your trolling again!!!

I had one glitch of jerky motion in Flat Out...installed X2 drivers which I did not have installed for 3 weeks prior when I first got the X2 (with no issues) and it solved it within minutes...It obviously solved a game issue...

It has also been proven (you punk) and you know it in many of the threads you have played dumb (may not be an act) in. PPL have stated it solved issues in a wide range of games and no longer required them to set affinity on the cores....

I am warning you Fatty....Stop the trolling. You have been around long enough to know everything I have stated.

If you cant graspo it after that long sell your X2 and go find a remedial computer site...or just by a Dell and never touch a computer again....Is that the high quality edu-macation you get at K-S-U?????

Edit: i apologize for this post to the OP, Mods, and others who have to witness this...however trolls need to be dealt with and this one is a well known troll...

I upgraded from SP1 to XP SP2. Then I got all the drivers from AMD website and also installed the hotfix. Did set the PerfEnablePackageIdle to 1.

This may not be relevant at all to this thread, but I just tried running CrystalMark again on the system, and the score has reduced slightly

CPU Name : AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ (Manchester)
2x512MB Corsair
No Overclocking
CrystalMark : 44586
[ ALU ] 16218
[ FPU ] 18256
[ MEM ] 10112

Before installing all these fixes the score was about 46900. Like I said, it may not be related to these installs, but why should the performance degrade anyways?

I dont want to overclock using the stock heatsink, but are there any ways to improve on the score without OCing.

Thanks.

You would need to show the exact score from before for me to take a guess....I would say make sure you do a fresh reboot and run again....

Fresh score after a reboot (Windows XP SP2, AMD X2 drivers and Windows hotfix installed):
CrystalMark : 44429
[ ALU ] 16170
[ FPU ] 18513
[ MEM ] 9746

Earlier system confi: Windows XP SP1, NO AMD X2 Drivers, No Windows X2 hotfix.
MARK: 46979
ALU: 16198
FPU: 20664
MEM: 10117

Thanks.

I would point the finger at SP2 being the reason for the performance hit over the X2 drivers.

SP2's recoding DID make a lot of benchmarks give slightly lower results.

Did set the PerfEnablePackageIdle to 1.

I tried searching for X2 4200+ performance to compare my system with, but could not find any. Can X2 4200+ owners please comment on their experience? Although it is very hard to find anybody who has not overclocked the system.

Am running everything - CPU, memory, Radeon X800 at stock.

Thanks.

It's probably more related to SP2 than anything else. You are right, it's hard to find one thats not overclocked. I have my 4200+ @2.618ghz. I did find a 4400+ at stock speeds, compared to that your score is just about right.
