Athlon64 FX-55 too hot?

Building my sister's bf's new PC... don't you hate it when people always ask you to do their computer work for them?

Anyway, I just booted it up for the first time and went through the bios. Stopped by the hardware monitor and saw the thing getting all toasty at 50C! My 3700+ Sandy OC'ed to the same speeds stays around 35-40C depending on how warm it is in SoCal.

I realize it will take a while for the AS5 to break in, but I wasn't expecting to see 50C. I'm using a Zalman 120mm Al/Cu HSF, Arctic Silver 5, in a Thermaltake Soprano case. Cool n' Quiet is disabled, of course.

I appreciate any feedback.. no one at Hard|OCP would answer my question.

Well.....

My FX-55 idles at 32-33 and loads at 44-45. This is with an XP-90c on top.

In the heat of the Las Vegas desert 🙂

You've got three choices: not enough heatsink (you never said which Zalman flower you're using), too much Arctic Silver, or not enough case airflow. And it's most likely a combination of those three. That's awfully warm for a Socket 939 chip, though.

I get pretty much the same temps as m21s at load using the XP-90 aluminum with some old AS3 compound and a generic 90mm fan at 8 volts. I get 27C idle and 45C loaded down here in the south. That 50 is odd for some reason. Seeing as how it hit 50 by the time you got to the BIOS screen I wouldn't say it's the case ventilation. Might check the HS surface for any foreign debris like hair, dust, carpet fibers, etc.

I just noticed the posting date of 11/19 so I figure you got it nailed down by now.
