I just bought the ZALMAN 7000-Cu heatsink and placed it on my athlon64 cpu with artic zilver 5 as the thermal compund, but my cpu temp is constanly around 62 degrees cel. (at idle state!!!!!) why is my cpu running so hot. The Zalman is at full speed(around 2500rpms)...someone please help me. Any suggestions on why and how I can get the temps down will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for the help.

Remove the heatsink, remove the AS5 (> 70% alcohol works well), remove any plastic or paper protectors. Reapply the AS5 THINLY [Use a credit card]. Remount the Zalman heatsink.

Make sure you don't put it on backwards.

Also, how good is your case ventilation?

I went to the artic silver website and they say that I should only about a pea size amount in the center of the cpu heat spreader. My case is pretty well ventilated.
My setup
Athlon64 3200
ati X800 pro
1 gig corsair twinXMS mem
3 hard drives(All western digital raptors two 36 and one 74 gig)
6 case fans two in front two in the back, one one top and one one the side that pulls off.

So what temp do you have for your cpu, and whats your setup...should I be alarmed at the temps? What is the heat tolerance for the athlon64.

How do you know that the HS is in the proper orientation? Also how thin should the AS5 be on the chip?

you cant put that hsf on backwords make sure the cpu fan wire or something else didnt get wedged under it i have a mobile barton running at 2.2 ghz and it never breaks 40 with that same hsf 62 degrees is above what i have my system to shut down at at that temp you are severly shortening the life of your cpu
