Athlon64 3200 in action

Unfortunately the world doesn't revolve around gaming....The scores of multimedia and rendering is what will impress me and it better be more then 5-10% of a 3.2c p4 since the 3.4ghz prescott will come to the table with many enhancements and can be 10% above a 3.2c...

No one is going to argue an amd flat out mhz to mhz performs better with its more instruction per clock cycle...The key will be ramping up of the speed and getting a windows 64bit OS to the market ASAP!!!!

Does anyone know if the a64 can be oc'd any??? If so how much.....

True....However I hate synthetic benchmarks on cross-platforms...Maybe on the same system I am tweaking but I just don't think the percentage increases ever seem to pan out in the real world...take a look at anandtechs opteron 3200+ they simulated to be an A64. The increases on average were 10% above the best p4 had to offer. Imagine a bit of tweaking an optimization can take that a bit more, but not like 3dmark is showing.

Duvie, can you give us the Cliff-Notes version of what Prescott's bringing to the table (aside from the 1MB L2)? Is it the one with more new instructions, or am I thinking of Tejas?

here is some....

We know it is manufactured using the .09micron process and in the beginning will be 478 socket and then change...I believe revised socket will be what you talk about and I have seen referenced as a T socket ot slot.

Thanks Duvie 🙂 I felt like a n00b for asking that, so I did go Google some Prescott info. I forsee a Prescott in your future, since some of the Prescott New Instructions are aimed at media encoding 😎 and it doesn't take long for that stuff to get utilized.

What I'm taking away from the thread at T-break is that the single-channel Athlon 64 is evidently no slouch, single-channel or not. And they scooted it right up to 2400MHz after backing the RAM down to make some headroom. These are exciting times we live in... 😀

The processor in that IS overclocked. Didn't you see the 215 mhz "FSB"? Overclocking will be possible by adjusting settings just like you do with the FSB now... only... there is no FSB, and the CPU needs an external frequency to multiply to get the core frequency... so it uses the Hyper Transport bus, which is 200 Mhz at the moment. I wouldn't be surprised to see 250 Mhz Hyper Transport buses from AMD eventually.
BTW... I got that info from AnandTech's own review of the A64 😀
