Well, the AMD Athlon64 3000+ looks like the best thing since sliced bread,
based on its un-overclocked results:

Athlon64 3000+ article (translated)

(thx to Derek Baker for the link)

The real question to me now is the overclocking situation, which seems very
confused. If you could get this chip to 2.3ghz or even 2.4ghz reliably it
should beat even heavily overclocked Bartons, but as it is my $45 1700+
@2.3ghz probably competes pretty well with it, not to mention those 1ghz fsb
P4s out there.

If it is like 3200+ A64 then you should expect to be able to get 2.3 GHz. Higher than that will be hard.

Ya know what I see when looking at that article? The 3000+ has the same transistor count as the 3200+, which means that missing 512k cache IS there... maybe there's a chance it can be enabled? :D

that link is being bombarded. the summarized results can be found @ the inquirer

http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=13187

i think one contributing factor to the lack of ability to overclock the a64 is the via k8t800 chipset which lacks pci/agp lock. once newer mobos with different chipsets come out this may be improved...

nevertheless, great price/performance ratio w.r.t games

I agree, looks like a great CPU, once the SiS 755 Chipset comes out I'm hopeing for some quality overclocking results~!

I'm hoping for good OC'ing also :)

I thought the A64 3000+ was clocked at 1.8GHZ, how come they have it at 2ghz?

I wonder if it has overclocking features to utilize the PCI/AGP lock.:)

It could maybe be enabled, but if the cache is on there I imagine it is down binned because a bad half of cache. I doubt yeilds are good enough to just start selling the best cpus as lower models like they do with the athlon xps. It could also be that these are newcastle chips that are only produced with 512k and the guy just miss counted somewhere around the 80 millionth transistor. :D

It's 2 Ghz with 512k L2 cache... the other rumor before facts were known about it was that it was 1.8 Ghz with 1 MB L2 cache.

Newegg lists it as 1.8ghz with 512kb L2.

They're wrong =) They had it listed before at 2.0 Ghz with 1 MB L2 cache... I e-mailed them about it and they said they're change it within a day... unfortunately they only changed it, didn't CORRECT it =)
