Athlon XPs and Heat generated?

Hello, I have been out of the loop for awhile since I bought my XP1800(AGOIA). It runs very hot on my Asus A7V266E MB. I was wondering if I upgraded MBs and processors if I could reduce the heat. If I remember right, the next gen XPs were supposed to run a little cooler. I think they started at the XP2600 speed.

Does anybody have any views on the heat produced by these new XPs?

I am either going to upgrade to an nForce 2 platform with an XP2600 or above, or go with an Intel set-up. One other forum member has already said the Intel path is the way to go, but bang for the buck, AMD seems the way.

This is all an effort to reduce heat. My wife wants to keep the computer room looking neat, so I have to keep the computer in a cabinet with a door. I keep the door open when it?s running, but it still radiates enough heat to make you sweat.

I also need help on RAM. I use PC2100 with my 266a platform, but what RAM would I use with a 400 MHz board, and the Intel line totally confuses me?

Thanks, Lowell

Well first of all, the Thoroubred B's do run a tad cooler but nothing that is going to affect your ambient house temp. ( room for that matter ).

Instead of spending all that money, you could just put a little money in cooling. Is that 1800+ enough for your current needs?

About the ram, yes you are going to want some new, faster memory... Some PC3200 should do you some justice as it runs @ 400mhz..

I have some Kingston Hyper X 3200 that does 220FSB...

:D

Come back for more.

Good Luck.

Thanks for the answers. I didn't go into detail on cooling before, but here's the deal. I have a copper heatsink with a high speed fan on the CPU. I have the sides of the case off right now and am blowing a 12 fan right into the cabinet. The temp is at 60C. If I put the case on the ground and blow the fan on high through the case, I can get the temp to the low 50s. With out the fan blowing in the cabinet, it runs at about 77C and 83C with a load. It's hot, I can literally burn my arm if I reach over the top of the case. I hope that helps understand what I am dealing with.

Thanks again, Lowell

If you're looking for a cool CPU, undervolting a 2100+ Tbred would be one solution, if your motherboard will let you undervolt CPU's. Most will run with 1.475-1.5 volts, and the CPU will run very very cool.

You can find actual wattages on all sorts of modern CPUs at www.sandpile.org. Note that they list both "typical" and maximum wattages (among other things) and that there are different core versions. Which core is your 1800+, the Palomino or the Thoroughbred?

I believe mine is the Palomino. It's the AGOIA stepping batch.

I also thought about under volting, but the BIOS doesn't support it. Maybe a new nForce 2 board would allow that.

Thanks again for the answers.

Is the room air conditioned? The Walmart I work at has 5200BTU GE brand AC's for $83 each. I'd say to stay away from the Fedders - we got quite a few returns - bad units for a variety of reasons.
Something else to look at for reducing heat is the monitor - if you're using a CRT, that's going to generate a good bit of heat too. If you want to spend even more money, an LCD could possibly give you more screen space, and reduce power consumption and heat production at the same time.
