Athlon XP2100+ (Tbred) Question?

Wow... it's been about a year since I posted on AT. Hehehe... weird to be back.

Anyway... I see that I can get an OEM XP2100+ T-bred at NewEgg for $93. However, I can get the retail box for $102. Why, since the retail box comes with HS/Fan, would I even want to consider the OEM processor. Also, the listing claims the retail box is ALSO a Thoroughbred.

Can anyone shine light on something that I may be missing?

OH... I'm thinking about throwing the processor on an Epox 8RDA+. So, if retail is bad for a particular reason (i.e. the HS/Fan sux), let me know...

Thanks....

Well... I will proabably want to overclock a bit. Actually, who am I kidding, I'll probably wnat to unleash the CPU as far as it will go. So, I guess that means I should go for the OEM, Arctic Silver 3, and some huge ridiculous HSF, right?

However, I really need stability, so if it means little or no overclock, I'd be ok with that. Plus, the retail would save me some $$ over a separate OEM and HSF combo. I'd probably still get the AS3 to replace the crappy junk that is standard.

I'm running an Athlon 850MHz with Iwill KK266 now... so the 2100+ will be a kick in the pants, O/C'd or not.

With retail you get a 3 yr warrranty + HSF for 9.00 more than an OEM. To me this is a no brainer.

You should also get a Tbred B if you order a 2100+ right now.

Well then, yes the HSF sucks for overclocking. If you have a decent budget for a HSF, try the SLK-800 for $35 now + a fan that can push at least 30cfm rating. Noise level is up to you. If you're looking for something a bit cheaper, the SLK-7 is a viable option for $20. If you do order ur Tbred OEM, u can get a 1year warranty from Newegg.com for $5 extra.

dude bye the HSF i have, the coolermaster dream 80mm and you'll be spending a whopping $14.95 and still blowing away most $49.00 HSF's. its really unbelievable. Great fan though

So for 4.00 more you can have an extra 2 year direct AMD warranty and a spare HSF if you get retail. 🙂

It is a very good HSF 😀

John... I'm hearing you. Even for the extra $9, I get the extra warranty... so even if I did decide to go with the bigger/better HSF, then I'm not losing much.

On the flip side... i work in the Semiconductor industry... and if a device works past the first 30-90 days, you are likely gonna be ok for years (assuming you don't start doing something dumb). But, $9 for the 3 year piece of mind may be worth it.

I'm not on a limited budget... I'm just SUPER CHEAP. Go figure.

In that case, buy retail, and also get the Coolermaster HAC-V81 (The Dream Heatsink) from Newegg.com while you're at it. Very economic and a good performing combo.

I love how quick the reponses are on this board.... i do miss that... but I don't miss wasting HOURS upon HOURS every day reading all the OffTopic stuff. Hehehe.

well I think the retail isn't known to be the overclocker. Last I knew the retail was still the palomino, that might have changed, I don't know, but the $93 OEM is the tried and true T bred B which means with a decent HS/fan you should beable to push 2-2.2GHz without breaking much of a sweat, especially ifyou know what you're doing.

I have a retail 2100+ at my office that is an AIUHB (TBred B) week 52 (brownie).

According to NewEggs advertisement... the retail unit is Tbred: AXDA2100BOX

Specifications:
CPU: 1.736 GHz
Type: 2100 XP Thoroughbred
Cache: 256K
Socket A (PGA) Retail(Box with Heatsink and fan)

So, if they sold me some crap (Palomino), I'd just send it right back.

I know it's the wrong forum, but what PC2700 (256MB sticks) would you recommend. I'm looking for stable, reliable, and the ability to potentially overclock somewhat. Maybe I'll just overclok the CPU only? I might just get 1 512MB... but I thought I might set up to take whatever advantage is avialable with the DualChannelDDR thing.

I know the performace gain is arguable... but someday it might mean something?!?1

Getting sleepy.... spelling and typing ability going downhill.

Edit: is this stuff any good?

SimpleTech (Simple Technologies) 256MB DDR PC2700 Major Brand Chip - OEM
Retail 64x32. 184-pin. Non-parity, Gold Contacts, 6 Layer PCB, CL=2.5, 2.5Volt, PC2700=DDR333, Lifetime Warranty?

I know in a weekly price guide, Anand (or whoever) recommended Samsungs PC2700. Should I order Ram from somewhere else? How about Crucial?
