Phone order only. 110.00 plus flat 6.95 ground shipping. It is listed higher on pricewatch, but the sales rep checked 3 times (1600, NOT 1500) and sold me one for the 116.95

It's woth a shot if you need one of these.

At this moment they have the XP 1500+ for $110.00+$6.95 on price Watch. Makes me think the clerk looked up the wrong item.

<< Just $5 more from Newegg right now and I think they are very good to deal with. >>

Except that Newegg shows the XP 1600+ as out of stock.

Yep newegg is OOS on the 1600+ OEM... but why not just pick up the 1700+?

I was also going to get the 1600+ but then when they went OOS I saw that the 1700+ was only like 14 bucks more ($136)! So I got it!

I think they have went up like 3 bucks since I placed my order (on 1/7/02). But the 1700+ is still only 139 which is like 17 dollars more than the OOS 1600+... so why not? I think its worth that... if you are going to shell out that much, why not add a few more and get a better CPU.

I think however, right now that AMD's pricing is all about nickel and diming you to death... and it is working...

you start out at the duron.... ohh why get the 850 for 44 when you can get the 950 for 50$ why get the 1ghz for 60$? oh wait you can get the 1.2 for 85$! and then... look I can pck up an xp 1500+ for 98$ at acess micro! well shoot... for 116 I might as well get the 1600+ and then its like well, I can get the RETAIL 1600+ for only 136$ at newegg... but wait the OEM 1700+ is only 139$!!!!

Now ive gone from 44$ to 139$ by these small increments.. I do this every night when I try to decide on my upgrade!!!!! ahhh im going insane!! is the perfomance of the duron really that bad??!?! how does it compare to a P3?

I know that I am a newbie nobody but, I think going with a 700 - 750 duron is the best route with a mother board that can overclock stable. I have a 700 at 940 and it is fast. I just got a xp 1500 pushed it up to a 1600 + overclocking, but I don' think it is that much faster. The benchmarks where a hell of alot faster but not everyday apps.

Now if you have a cad program or high intense app of some sort you need the xp, if not I think staying back 3 or 4 steps from the newest and best thing is very cheap and now a days is still very fast.

My 2 cents

Tydas,

believe me, I feel your pain.. I am getting VERY frustrated..

Lukean,

I think that you have the right idea.... I think that a duron 700 would perform very well epsecially at 940... Alot of people get caught up on benchmarks.. and as I heard someone say once... "I play games... sysoft sandra is not a game" so if you arent noticing any diff in your apps and games who cares what benchmarks say.. however it IS really easy to climb the upgrade ladder like that, so I think it is good to stay at the lower end if you can make yourself do it...

My question however is:

How much more real world performance difference will I see in a duron 700 from my current celery (1) ppga 366@550?

WageSlave, you better watch out if you ever step into a new car dealership!!!

FWIW, I have been running a k6-2+ 450@550 for while (I think this is a little faster than your celly). I recently put together a duron 850 system for my father. I used a cheap BCM board with Sis 730 w/integrated video. It was noticibly faster than my system. A comparison using Wintune showed it to be roughly 50% or more faster in most measurements (cpu, floating point, memory, etc). The integrated video was much faster than my Nvidea Vanta M64/16MB card.

It took a lot of self control not to keep his system and send him mine.

Good luck.

You're driving yourself insane because you don't make a decision. Just get what you want and don't worry about it. I would say you should at least double your proc speed if you are upgrading to feel like you are really doing something. If you're building a new machine go with the fastest you can afford. I went thru the same back and forth and I finally made a decision. It feels so much better... except for the buyers remorse we all feel at some time... Well did I just contradict my whole post???? Just do something; it seems we all tend to over-analyze...

I spoke with a sales rep and they said that the price of $110.00 with 6.95 S&H was only for the 1500 XP.

IMHO 122$ is not a good price at newegg for the OEM 1600+ since for like 12$ more you can get reatail.. but thats just my 2 cents... Anyhow... I had a k6-2 450 @ 500 and it was great, but not for game performance, as the FPU wasnt up to snuff..I dont know if an FPU enhancement was doen for the k62+ ... but they were good chips in their time.. I am still stuck however.. I want to be abel to utilize my good vid card.. I have a radeon 64mbddr and it is sitting in this celery machine and I feel it is somewhat wasted unfortunatley.. so it seems like even in a 700 it would be alot faster.. I think however that I do NEED to make a decision.. I will decide this weekend and order monday morning... but any more input is very welcome

Wageslave: The 1700+ is now down to $127 at Newegg. It has your name on it. You know you want it! LOL

Seriously though, I was in the same predicament and did end up going for the 1700+. I figured it was the last processor where the price difference was not huge between it and the next one up so I opted for that. Plus it had free shipping at the time and the 1600+ did not. I don't regret buying it at all. I figure it's that much longer I can hold off having to upgrade again later and also I got in on the Best Buy Crucial memory deal and saved quite a bit there.

Just do what you think is best. For me honestly the 1700+ is probably overkill for what I do with my computer, but I like having that security blanket. :)

Wageslave: I had a k6-2 350 and then a 450@500. Great windows cpu but i found that even a celeron 366 was preferable for gaming, and that same 366@550 blew away my k6-2. Amd didnt really "arrive" until the athlon.
