Athlon XP shim question

I bought a shim to protect my athlon thats coming soon and theres a copper side that faces down onto the cpu and the other side has a plastic cover on it, i never noticed it until recently, its pretty well secured, should i take it off? Would the plastic not melt otherwise?

you're supposed to peel the film off. Don't ask me why it's necessary to put it on there.
