Athlon XP rig running way too hot!

I built an athlon XP 1800+ rig for my friend a while back. The case is pretty much a 30 dollar POS and the cpu fan is stock, but it's been running fine for about 2 years already. Recently, the cpu has been reaching temps of about 58 degrees C and right before getting a BSOD and shutting off. I took out the cpu fan and heatsink, cleaned off some dust and put on some generic thermal paste I had laying around but it did nothing. The comps not overclocked or anything.
My question is, is there anything I can do to get it to atleast run without overheating w/o buying anything too expensive (or nothing at all)? If my friend needs to buy some stuff, what are some cheap yet effective cpu coolers and/or cases that I could replace the stock ones with? Thanks.

I had a problem with a 1900+ that I had that was running fine on stock cooking until one day it stared getting up into the 70s celcius, and then the computer would just shut off.
So, I giot one of these. I'm quite pleased.

I'm pretty sure it's installed securely and correctly. I had the comp running in my house before I gave it to my friend, and it'd normally see temperatures of about 46C idle and 52 full load. I thought these temps were a little bit high but everything always worked so I never questioned anything. The temps seem pretty high now that I look at the comp I'm on now running at 29C....

Btw, what temps are you seeing now with that installed Rock Hydra???

Maybe he's stuffing it into a  computer hutch where it cannot get airflow?

My motherboard reports 40 degrees. No fluctuation whatsoever. But I'm happy that my computer isn't overheating and shutting down.

Try blowing out the hsf.

I ran into this problem a while back with my old rig.

I even started a thread asking for help here.

My computer had been running without cleaning for around 2 years, and temps would hover in the mid-sixties.

Edit: nevermind

do you think it also might be a bad power supply? The one it came with came with the case and is rated 400watts but i highly doubt it is since the whole case+psu was like 30 bucks. My friend said the temp reading was only 49 yet it got a BSOD for a split second and reset.

I was a stupid head and put it on backward for a week with the temp at 60 ;P

I changed it and now its way cooler.

Sounds like the PSU to me.

Two good years out of a PSU (obviously) that cheap? Sounds lucky to me, and I would get it ot of there b4 it could damage some other component.

I seated my Thermalright SLK900A backwards on my T'Bred B 1700+. Temps never broke around 47C and my PC would reset itself. After some close inspection, I realised I was an idiot and fixed it.

In what terms is too expensive? It sounds like a new case would be ideal. Are there case fans you are using? How many and where? Not only is the CPU fan important, but case flow as well, otherwise you will have a heat bubble around the CPU that can't dissipate because of poor airflow. I would suggest a good solid mid-priced antec case of about ~$60, I think there are a few out there that include a 350W PSU with that price. Good luck!

I hope you mean put some NEW thermal paste, not more. This is a case where more is not better. Only a thin layer, not more!
