Does any have this setup. I am expecting 5 Dimes tommorow, and Id like to upgrade my system. Right now I have a Slot A 700 Mhz Athlon. Id like to get a top of the line 1.6 Mhz Athlon XP Processor, w/ new mobo, DDR ram, etc. The works I guess.

A couple things tho, currently I have 3 harddrives, and Id like to keep them all, and not have to format them. Will I have to format or erase them if I change my motherboard or swap them out into a different case?

Also, can someone explain these new AMD processors. I have windows xp and office xp, so which will work best with this software? My 700 right now is ok in speed, but I want the fastest. This XP 1600 is like 250 bucks. Thast not too bad. For more than doubling the speed of my PC. :). Whats MP?

Also, do you have this kind of setup? How do you like it? Would you recommend it? Is it the fastest currently out, and how much DDR ram is required, 2100? Thanks.

the new processors are just the line following the thunderbird. used to be refered to as the palomino, or athlon4. XP stands for extreme performance and has nothing to do with windows/office xp, just playing off the name (marketing move).

the MP is the multiple processor version, it's the same as the XP but guaranteed to work in multiple processor situations. unless you are running dual processors, you dont need it.

where are you getting your prices? you in canada? an xp1600 (remember this isnt 1600 mhz, it's supposedly the equivelant of a thunderbird at 1.6ghz. it's actually 1.4ghz. the 1700 is a 1.47ghz, the 1800 a 1.53ghz, and the xp1900 a 1.6ghz. and it should be obvious this was marketing also and not based on the tbird, but to compete against intel's p4 line) should run about 125$ USD or so i would think. the xp1700 is about 140$ usd.

what is "5 Dimes"?

as far as the hard drives...yes you could put them in the new system, but expect headaches galore. maybe you'll get lucky and it wont be so bad. you'll have to remove everything under system devices in the device manager and install all the new stuff.

as far as ram...just get 512megs (2x256) of crucial 2100. should set you back about 100$. as far as a mobo, the favorites are the shuttle ak31 and the epox 8kha+. about 85 and 105 respectively.

imo the xp1700 is about the best bang for the buck.

Well, let's see here

1) If you don't want to reformat, you can go into device manager and remove everything under "system devices" (that's all the stuff related to your mobo. Then shut down, install the new mobo and case, and boot up...WinXP will find all your new hardware and after a couple reboots you'll be set.

2) The athlon XP is AMD's newest and fastest processor. The XP1900 is out, but still overpriced...the 1600 or 1700 is probably the best deal right now for price versus performance. MP is basically an XP processor that's been certified for use in dual-cpu mobos...so you don't have to worry about that right now

3) PC2100 DDR is pretty standard now for the XP's. I'd suggest 512 megs if you want to do it right, though 256 is a good starting point.

4) have you thought about mobo's? I'd probably suggest the Epox 8kha+...you can find lots of reviews of it out there

Instead of futzing around with Device Manager -

Enter the Registry, and go to HKEY_Local_Machine > System > CurrentControlSet > and delete the ENUM key.

This will serve the same purpose (without the tedium) as deleting the DM entries, and also force redetection and reconfiguration of any background services. As usual, ALWAYS backup the registry, and save it to a known location before you make any changes.

BTW - AMD claims that the Athlon XP's are optimized for use with WinXP . . . and WinXP will utilize as much RAM as you care to install - I would suggest 256 Mb minimum; but at today's prices, 512 Mb would be a worthwhile investment.

When he said 1.6 GHz, he MEANT 1.6 GHz, which is the XP1900, and yes, the XP1900 does cost $250...
