OK... I decided to go with the Athlon XP processor. I think it will be my best bet. I want to get the athlon 1500 xp. THere is one problem. What motherboard should i get and i need to get ddr memory. what would be the best motherboard w cpu and fan and ddr memory. Man i wish ddr and sdram were backwards compatiable.

I'm partial to the EPoX 8K7A+

If you go with the EPoX, make sure you get a good PSU. Enermax, while good, has issues with the 2-phase power design on the EPoX boards

Epox 8KHA+
Thermalrite SK6, or the Alpha Pal8045 if you are a hardcore overclocker.

I would go with the Epox too. Epox of late has been very good at making stable, feature filled boards. I've read that the 8KHA+ has been having trouble with overclocking its FSB, but if you're not overclocking it will be hard to beat. I'm not saying that the AK31 Rev.3 isn't good, (check my rig) just that it's a budget board with little quirks, and you have to know what you're doing to iron them out. Once you have though it will compete with the best of em'. :D

If you're willing to spend more money ~$150

You might also consider the SOYO Dragon. This is a feature filled board with good onboard sound, network, RAID, and it looks really cool! Other good bets would be the ABIT KG7 RAID and the Asus A7V266-E. Good luck!

i have a giga-byte 7DXR (amd 761) and it's good

but of course i bought it when it first came out, so i'd suggest either the shuttle kt266a board or .... wait for nForce, but that's me

Hey Mem,

I saw your Epox stats and noticed that you have an Audigy card and Win XP Pro installed on your Epox 8KHA+ setup. I ordered the same Epox board and will be using an Audigy and Win XP Pro on it also, when all my parts arrive.
I was wondering if you had any issues with the SB Audigy card conflicting with the Epox MB on-board audio? Also have you experienced any problems using the SB Audigy on WinXP Pro? And any problems with WinXP Pro in general?

Thanks,
JOSEPH

Shuelessjo,
Nope all working great, just disable onboard sound in bios and you are set,I also disabled the game and midi port adress in bios for it as well,I`ve only had mine since last Friday but the SB Audigy has been excellent on stabilty no driver problems at all ,games that I`ve tried so far have been CS,UT,Giants,DroneZ,Gunlock ,I also got the lastest driver XP update from Creative labs site and installed that with no problems.

XP PRO has been very stable :).

I would suggest the Shuttle AK31A. It is not a quirky budget board as one poster said. It is just as good as the 8KHA+ according to just about everyone who has had the opportunity to use both. If you don't want to get any DDR memory quite yet, then you can go with the ECS K7S5A. It has SDR and DDR slots. Two of each, if I'm not mistaken. This will give you some time to scrape together more money for the memory.
