Athlon XP core upgrades?

Sorry for the cross-post, I put this on the CPU forum too. Just trying to get an answer to this.

I'm getting ready to build a new system around an Athlon XP 1800 and I've noticed on a number of different websites that you get an option to upgrade to a different core.

For example: www.bzboyz.com allows you, at check out, to upgrade to an AGKGA core, but only if you're buying the OEM chip. You don't get the option if you're buying the retail box. I saw this at at least one other web store.

Now, being the curious type, I wandered over to AMDs site and imagine my surprise when I could find no additional information about core upgrades.

Does anyone know what this is and what the benefit of the upgrade might be? The cost was marginal, another $20.

There is no difference unless you are an overclocker. Certain batches seem to overclock better than others. I suppose the one they charge more for is one of those that is known to overclock better than the others.

Ah.. okay, so it's similar to the old Celeron 300A where some versions had better overclocking success. Cool.. that'll save me $20 🙂

Overclocking is not for me.. I burned up a couple Celerons and powersupplies over the years messing around and it's not like you're doubling your power or anything.

Thanks
